WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senior
Taurus Samuels went for a career-high 23 points with six 3-pointers and graduate
Brendan Barry added 19 with six long balls of his own as Dartmouth (1-1) defeated host Georgetown (0-1) at the Capital One Arena on Saturday afternoon, spoiling the Hoyas' season opener. It was the first Big Green victory over a major conference opponent in almost 32 years.
Freshman
Ryan Cornish chipped in his first 14 college points on 5-of-9 shooting with three long balls as well as the Big Green hit 16-of-38 (.421) from the perimeter to pick up their biggest road win since upsetting Buffalo in the 2019-20 season opener.
Samuels hit 8-of-17 field goals and 6-of-10 from distance to lead the Big Green while Barry was 6-of-12 from downtown and hauled in a team-best eight rebounds to match a personal best.
Dartmouth led for nearly the entire game, beginning with Barry's first triple of the night after one minute of action. The Big Green lead was just two at 10-8 following a dunk by Georgetown's Malcolm Wilson, but the Hoyas went cold for nearly seven minutes as the Green rattled off 13 straight points. Samuels provided the first seven with a floater in the lane, a trifecta and a layup off the break, junior
Cam Krystkowiak popped a trey and Cornish converted a three-point play for a 23-8 lead with more than nine minutes on the clock.
Aminu Mohammed, the preseason Big East Freshman of the Year, ended the run with layup, but it did not stem the tide as senior
Garrison Wade scored on a putback and Samuels drilled another 3-pointer. The Dartmouth lead ballooned to as many as 22 at 36-14 following consecutive rainmakers from Cornish, though the Hoyas managed to close the gap to 16, 37-21, at the intermission thanks to a seven-point spurt before the end of the half.
Both Cornish and Samuels had 11 over the first 20 minutes of play to lead the Big Green charge as Dartmouth went 14-of-30 (.467) from the floor with seven triples. Mohammed, meanwhile, provided nearly half of Georgetown's production with nine points as the Big Green defense held the Hoyas to 28.1 percent shooting (9-of-32).
That 16-point advantage nearly evaporated in the first four minutes of the second half as Georgetown came out on fire, ripping off 14 straight points while knocking down its first five shots with Kaiden Rice providing a trio of treys. Barry finally brought the run to an end with a 3-pointer of his own and Cornish followed with another for some breathing room.
The lead was still eight, 48-40, when the Hoyas strung together 10 straight points to take its first lead of the night, ending with back-to-back fast-break dunks by Mohammed and Jordan Riley.
That 50-48 Georgetown lead was very short-lived, however, as Samuels drilled a three 16 seconds later to put Dartmouth back on top. That kicked off an 11-0 run that included another Samuels triple and one more from Barry with just over nine minutes remaining.
The Big Green lead climbed to 13 points two minutes later at 66-53 when Barry pulled off a four-point play. Neither team could muster much offense over the next five minutes with Dante Harris scoring the lone field goal in that span. When Barry knocked down his final 3-ball of the night with 2:08 on the clock, Dartmouth enjoyed a 69-56 advantage. A pair of Hoya turnovers in the final two minutes sabotaged any chance the hosts had to stage a comeback, and only a Mohammed layup with three seconds to go kept the difference in single digits.
Dartmouth finished the game 25-of-60 (.417) from the field and attempted just five free throws, making three. Georgetown, hit more than half of its shots after the break (14-of-27, .519) to improve to 39.0 percent for the game (23-of-59). Mohammed led the Hoyas with 17 points while Donald Carey chipped in 14 to go with a team-best seven rebounds as GU had a 39-34 edge on the glass.
Dartmouth will next play its home opener on Tuesday, Nov. 16 against NVU-Lyndon at Leede Arena at 7 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on ESPN+ with Bob Lipman and former Big Green head coach Dave Faucher calling the action, while an audio stream is also available for free through the DartmouthSports.com website featuring Brett Franklin and Bill Murphy on the call.
Notes: The last major conference opponent that the Big Green had defeated was Texas A&M on Dec. 17, 1989 … Dartmouth is 37-40 all-time against the current Big East schools and 2-1 against Georgetown … it was the first meeting between the two schools on either team's home court, last playing each other in the Kodak Classic in Rochester, New York back in 1974, a 57-56 Big Green victory.
