DURHAM, N.H. – Dartmouth women's basketball dropped its first road game of the season to New Hampshire on Saturday, 58-46. The Big Green already saw improvements from their season opener against Rhode Island earlier in the week.
Mia Curtis had another double-digit point performance, ending up with 10 by going 5-for-12 at the line. In the first game of her senior season,
Katie Douglas led the team by going 3-for-5 in 3-pointers, also going 3-for-7 in field goals and ending the game with 9 points.
"The foul trouble, turnovers and the inconsistencies on the boards hurt us," the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball said. "We had some good stretches, but our team lacked discipline in critical moments. This young, inexperienced team is a work in progress and I am confident this setback will inform our growth moving forward."
Dartmouth (0-2) at UNH (1-2)
The first quarter was very even; one team scored, the other responded. The Bobcats opened scoring with a 3-pointer just over a minute in, while
Allie Harland had one of her own a minute later. Dartmouth took a slight lead on two occasions – the second off a Curtis jumper – before five consecutive UNH points put it three ahead with 2:35 to go (11-8).
Mekkena Boyd got the Green within one before the home team ended the quarter with four straight points to head to the second with a 15-10 advantage.
The Bobcats made that a six-point lead in the first 21 seconds of the second quarter, but back-to-back treys for Douglas tied things up (16-16). A 9-0 run for the home team over the course of three minutes gave UNH its first real lead of the game (25-16). Two good free throws by
Emma Koch broke up the streak before the Bobcats put up another seven (32-18). Two more charity shots, this time from Harland, in the last 16 minutes ended the first half (32-20).
Four more Bobcat points started things off before Dartmouth found some momentum; an 11-6 Big Green run – highlighted by 3-pointers from Douglas and
Karina Mitchell – over the course of four minutes made it a 42-31 game. Three minutes of good looks and missed shots was ended by a 4-3 UNH streak, capped by a layup from
Isabella DiGiovanni, to make it a 12-point game (46-34).
Three minutes into the fourth quarter, the Bobcats had furthered their lead by six while keeping the Big Green off the board (52-36). Dartmouth increased its point total thanks to shots by Curtis, DiGiovanni and
Rosie Jennings, getting back within 12 before the end of the game (58-46).
Holy Cross is on the menu next. The game at the Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Tuesday.
