NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Dartmouth volleyball team had a 3-1 defeat of Columbia (25-17, 25-20, 21-25, 28-26) to end its final road weekend of the 2021 season. The Big Green have won six of their last seven matches and head to the final matches of the year on a four-match winning streak.
There were two double-doubles:
Taite Ryan (17K, 13D) and
Emma Engstrom (28D 10A).
"We played tough tonight," head coach
Gilad Doron said. "This is the hardest road trip and to come up with two big road wins says a lot about our team and the direction we're heading. We have a very tough group who is growing each and every match and learning how to compete. I am proud of our players tonight finding the energy and fight to finish the fourth game."
The Big Green won the first five points of the first set from a handful of Lion errors and kills by
Amelia Gibbs and
Ellie Blain before Columbia made its way into the game. Dartmouth remained in control, putting as many as nine points between it and the home team (22-13). The Green easily won, ending the set thanks to a kill by
Bomi Ogunlari (25-17).
The second was closer and Dartmouth only had a one-point lead before some errors and a Ryan kill gave the Big Green more of an edge (9-5). A 4-1 run made up of kills by Ogunlari, Ryan and
Piper Stevens put even more distance between them (13-7), but Dartmouth didn't stop there. With a 14-10 edge, the visitors won five of the next six points (19-11). The Lions put in a last-minute bid to try and win, getting a little close for comfort at the end, but the Big Green got there first with another Stevens kill (25-20).
Dartmouth started the third set ahead until a 7-3 Columbia rally put the home team up (8-11). The Big Green slowly started to cut into the gap until a few Lion errors and a kill by
Emma Moffet got Dartmouth within two (18-20). The Green had one final kill from Moffet before Columbia won (21-25).
The fourth started in Dartmouth's favor, but a 5-1 Lion run gave the lead to them (6-5). Four ties later, the Big Green pulled away following a kill by Ogunlari and an error on the other side of the net (11-9). After Columbia caught up, there were six more ties before kills by Blain and Ryan made it an 18-16 set in Dartmouth's favor. Four points on either side kept the teams two points apart before two more for the Lions tied the score at 22-all. Kills by Gibbs and Moffet got Dartmouth to match point, while three more ties kept the game going (26-26). A pair of kills by Ryan wrapped up the match (28-26).
The Big Green will close the 2021 season next weekend at home against Yale and Brown. Dartmouth will recognize its four seniors before the match against the Bears.
