BANGOR, Maine – A large run by the home team during the second half proved too much as Dartmouth fell to Maine, 65-53, on Sunday afternoon.
Mekkena Boyd and
Carrington Washburn led the team with 14 points apiece, while Boyd was also first with eight rebounds.
Victoria Page went 5-for-6 in free throws (.833).
Dartmouth (1-11) at Maine (3-7)
Boyd got the first two points on the board after being fouled in the first minute and the score stayed there for another two and a half minutes. After that, Washburn's layup and free throw followed by Page's 3-pointer made it an 8-0 game with 5:56 remaining. The Black Bears finally got on the board at 4:50 but had gone 0-for-7 in FG and 0-for-4 in threes during that quiet period. Dartmouth had an 8-1 run after Maine's only layup, capped by Washburn's trey at the buzzer (16-3).
Another Boyd foul shot and a layup by
Emma Koch, all within the first 37 seconds, put the Green up by 16. The Black Bears hit their first three less than 90 seconds in, but Washburn responded with not one but two 3-pointers (25-6). Maine had a bit of a run after that, scoring seven of the next eight points over a two-minute span before Page hit all four of her free throws. The Black Bears added a layup with two ticks to go to end the half (30-17).
The teams traded threes to start the third. Anne Simon kicked it off at 8:38, followed by
Mia Curtis less than 30 seconds later. Caroline Bornemann added one at 7:47 and Boyd had her first at 7:32. Simon scored her second a minute later before Boyd's layup, but another two points for Maine made it a 10-point game (38-28). Curtis added another trey with 2:26 to go, and the Bears answered with a 7-0 run in the final two minutes (45-37).
The Black Bears continued on their hot streak, starting the fourth on a 9-0 run to pull ahead for the first time (46-45). Boyd's 3-pointer with 7:32 remaining gave the lead back to the Big Green before Maine tied it up soon after. There were two lead changes and two ties before the home team took a six-point lead late in the quarter (58-52). Boyd had a free throw while the other team hit six to end the game (65-53).
Dartmouth will wave goodbye to 2021 and begin 2022 at Leede Arena, hosting UMass in the final non-conference game on Dec. 28 before opening Ivy play against Cornell on Jan. 2.
