HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth women's basketball opened Ivy League play at home on Sunday, falling to Cornell, 45-36.
Emma Koch led the way with seven points after going 2-for-3 in 3-pointers and was first with a career-high seven rebounds.
Allie Harland also had a pair of treys to end the game with six points.
Dartmouth (1-12, 0-1) vs. Cornell (6-6, 1-0)
After a quiet two-minute start to the first quarter, Cornell scored seven unanswered points before Koch dropped the first 3-pointer of the year right around the midway point. The Big Red responded with a trey of their own 30 seconds later and the score remained 10-3 for over two minutes, but the final 1:58 had more action. The visitors had a slight 5-4 advantage during that time – with Dartmouth's contributions coming from
Victoria Page and
Mia Curtis – to end the first with a 17-7 lead.
Although Cornell had control at the start of the second, the Big Green swooped in soon after and a 9-0 run thanks to a trey by Harland, a pair of field goals from
Doreen Ariik and one by
Jimena Abejon, and a
Victoria Page free throw made it a four-point game (21-17). The Big Red battled back after being held scoreless for five minutes, hitting two threes in less than two minutes.
Isabella DiGiovanni added a jumper before the half was done (29-19).
Two Cornell field goals started the third quarter before
Carrington Washburn drained a 3-pointer for her first points of the game 90 seconds in. A Koch free throw, Harland's second trey of the game and Rosie Jenning's jumper got Dartmouth within five points while halting the Big Red's momentum for half of the quarter (33-28). Both teams had just two points each in the final 3:26 to keep the score within five heading to the final quarter, 35-30.
A 5-0 Cornell run over the first two minutes of the fourth put some distance between the teams, ending by Jenning's foul shot (40-31). The Big Red furthered their lead with a jumper and two free throws until Curtis' shot cut in. All was quiet for a three-minute span, but Koch broke the silence with her second 3-pointer with 56 seconds to go, the last points of the game (45-36).
The Big Green will be on the road this weekend when they visit Yale and Brown.
