HANOVER, N.H. – After having its match last weekend canceled, the Dartmouth men's tennis team was finally able to hit the court after 427 days away from action, defeating Williams, 5-2, at home on Saturday.
Â
"This match was significant in many ways – our first and only match of the season for this team, the first match for our 24s, and the last Dartmouth match for our seniors," said
Xander Centenari '13, the John Kenfield and
Chuck Kinyon Head Coach of Men's Tennis Fund. "First of all, we are very grateful to have had the opportunity to play this match. It has not been an easy year for these guys and to be able to play a match at home, outdoors, on a beautiful day in Hanover, is awesome.
Â
"As for the match, I thought we did a good job on doubles courts one and three to get off to a strong start, as well as our No. 2 to be able to battle back after being a break down," Centenari continued. "I thought we played better and better tennis across the board as the match went on, and we played aggressively and on our terms, deep in matches. Big thank you to Williams for coming this way and making this match happen. They competed hard from beginning to end."
Â
Wins on all three doubles courts gave the first point of the afternoon to the Big Green. At the No. 1 position, freshman
Logan Chang and senior
Peter Conklin had a 6-1 win, while fellow seniors
John Speicher and Dan. Martin won their match at No. 3 by the same score. On court two, senior
Casey Ross and freshman
Andy Ilie had a closer match, winning by a score of 6-4.
Â
In singles, Martin's 6-2, 6-1 victory on the top court gave Dartmouth a bigger lead, but a Williams win at the No. 2 position got the visitors within one. Ross had a 6-1, 6-3 win on court five, while Chang clinched with a score of 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 6 spot. Junior
Sid Chari added a win of his own at the No. 4 position and the Ephs got their second victory to end the match.
