DAVIDSON, N.C. — Sophomore
Alex Gu, making his collegiate debut, posted a pair of rounds at 4-over 76 to lead the Dartmouth men's golf team on the first day of the River Run Invitational hosted by Davidson College. The Big Green ended the day with a 317-307—624 (+48) to wrap up their first rounds as a team in 19 months.
Davidson' cross-county rival, Charlotte, was the only team in the field to break par and did so in both rounds to take a 15-stroke lead at 7-under par (569). The host Wildcats tied with Marshall for second place at 8-over par, while Radford is one stroke behind the two in fourth and George Mason is in fifth at 10-over in the 16-team field.
Gu, tied for 44th in the 84-player field, provided the most consistent golf for Dartmouth with six birdies and 16 pars on the day. In the first round, he reached the turn at 3-over then immediately posted consecutive birdies on 10 and 11 before finishing with his first 76 (+4). Gu opened the second round with another set of consecutive birdies on the first two holes and added two more birdies on the back nine on the par-3 14th and par-5 18th to end the day on a high note.
Three-time Big Green captain
Jason Liu was four strokes behind his teammate in a tie for 64th with a 79-77—156 (+12) despite carding 21 pars and five birdies. A few hiccups in the middle of both rounds sabotaged his final score. Matching Gu in the second round was senior
Charles Petrie after posting an 81 over the first 18 holes, ending the day in 66th with a 157 (+13). Like Liu, he had five birdies and nearly matched his captain with 20 pars.
Junior
Eli Thrasher provided the other scores to the team total with an 81-78—159 (+15), tying for 68th as he sank three birdies and 18 pars. Completing the Dartmouth team effort was freshman
Eli Kimche in his collegiate debut who completed the day at 35-over par.
The third and final round will be played on Tuesday with the Big Green teeing off on the back nine at 8:55 a.m.
