DAVIDSON, N.C. — Captain
Jason Liu provided Dartmouth's low round of the River Run Invitational in the third and final round today, carding a 1-over 73 as the Big Green wrapped up play on the 7,317-yard, par-72 course with a 309 (+21). That score left the team in 16th place at 69-over for the tournament in its first action in 19 months.
Charlotte won the team title handily at 15-under par (849) with four of the top five individual scores coming from 49ers, including Matt Sharpstene who took home medalist honors with a 9-under 207, one stroke ahead of teammate Ben Woodruff. Coming in a distant second place was Marshall (880, +16), 31 strokes off the pace, while host Davidson and Radford tied for third overall with an 18-over 882 in the 16-team field.
Liu entered the final round in a tie for 64th, then posted the biggest rise through the ranks, jumping 26 spots into a tie for 38th with a final score of 229 (+13). The graduate student sank six birdies on the day to offset a trio of bogeys and a pair of doubles as he pushed hard to make up ground in the standings.
Senior
Charles Petrie finished his stay in North Carolina with a 77 (+5) to creep up four places in the final standings into a tie for 62nd at 18-over par (244) thanks to a couple of birdies today. The Big Green leader through two rounds, sophomore
Alex Gu, matched freshman teammate
Eli Kimche with 11 pars today but settled for an 8-over 80 to fall into a tie for 56th with a 232 (+16). Kimche, meanwhile, rebounded from a rough collegiate debut yesterday to shoot a 7-over 79 today.
Rounding out the Dartmouth contingency was junior
Eli Thrasher with three birdies and a final round of 9-over (81).
The Big Green will be back in action at the Macdonald Cup hosted by Yale this Saturday and Sunday.
