SPRINGDALE, N.J. — Dartmouth senior
Samantha Yao led the Big Green women's golf team at the Ivy Intercollegiate featuring the six teams in the Ancient Eight and six ACC squads, carding an 11-over 155 in the two rounds on the Lower Course at Baltusrol.
North Carolina won the tournament by five strokes over Florida State, shooting 294-295—589 (+13), while Princeton took third at 20-over par (596). Dartmouth, meanwhile, finished the day carding a 320-312—632 (+56) to land in 12th place.
"Baltusrol is one of the top championship courses in the country for a reason," said
Alex Kirk, the Carolyn A. Pelzel '59a Head Coach of Women's Golf. "Par is a good score and bogeys will happen, but we need to eliminated the doubles. Although we started slow in the first round, we played much better in the second, though the scores don't really reflect how much we improved."
Yao began the day on the 6,190-yard, par-72 course with a double bogey on 17 for the shotgun start. She eventually added three birdies to her first 18 holes, closing the round with a 6-over 78 to lead the Big Green. In the afternoon, she had a much better start with three birdies and four pars over her first seven holes. With seven to play she was still at 1-under, but four straight bogeys and a double dropped her to 5-over before she righted her ship with pars on the last two holes. Her 77 (+5) matched two of her teammates for the low round, tying for 31st overall with her 155 (+11).
Like Yao, junior
Katherine Sung doubled her opening hole on 14, but that was balanced out by her eagle on the 495-yard, par-5 17th. She was still at even par after eight holes when disaster struck on the next two holes, dropping her to 8-over, which is where she remained thanks to six pars, a birdie and a bogey to shoot an even 80 (+8). Her second round was a bit more consistent, equaling Yao's 77 to end the day tied for 40th at 13-over par (157).
Freshman
Sophie Thai contributed six birdies over the two rounds, matching Yao for the most on the team, as she shot an 81-77—158 (+14) to tie for 45th. Sophomore
Claire Xu and junior
Penelope Tir each contributed a 9-over 81 to the team effort, Xu in the opening round and Tir the following one as the ended the day tied for 56th at 21-over par (165).
North Carolina's Krista Junkkari and Florida State's Lottie Woad tied atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under par (141) with a 72 to start the day and a 69 in the second round. Princeton's Yanjun Liu was the top finisher from the Ivy League in third place just one stroke off the pace after leading the field after the first 18 at 2-under par.
The 12 teams will engage in a match play round on Tuesday with the top finishers from the ACC schools paired up with the correlating finishers amongst the Ivy teams. The round on the Upper Course will begin at 9 a.m.
