SPRINGDALE, N.J. — Junior
Penelope Tir and freshman
Sophie Thai both tied their ACC opponents in match play on Tuesday, but the ACC got the better of the six Ivy League women's golf teams, winning the round, 20.5-9.5, to complete the Ivy Intercollegiate competition at Baltusrol.
Playing on the 6,266-yard, par-72 Upper Course, each of the 30 Ivy golfers were paired up against their ACC counterpart based on the order of finish within their own conference from yesterday's two rounds of stroke play on the Lower Course. Tir was pitted against Notre Dame's Caroline Curtis and quickly jumped out to a big lead, going 5-up through six holes. But after halving the seventh hole, Curtis won the next six straight to suddenly take a 1-up lead. The two traded the next two holes before Tir won another to even the match up, and the final two holes were halved to finish all square.
Thai, meanwhile, went up against Riley Quartermain of North Carolina, the team that won the two-round tournament on Monday. Starting on the 14th hole, the rookie won two of the first three before Quartermain claimed the next three to take a 1-up advantage. Thai fell behind by two before winning the seventh and eighth, equaling the match, only to have the Tar Heel win nine and 10. But with pars on the final three holes while Quartermain bogeyed twice, Thai got back to even on the final hole to earn the tie.
Senior
Samantha Yao, Dartmouth's top finisher yesterday, dropped her match to Florida State's Amelia Williamson, 2-and-1. After falling behind on their first hole (the 10th in the shotgun format), Yao never got back to even, nor did she fall behind by more than two holes at any point.
In an even closer match, sophomore
Claire Xu jumped out to an early lead on the opening hole, but when the turn arrived, she was 3-down to Franzisca Sliper of Miami. But Xu won three of the next five holes to even the match before dropping the next hole. The two went into the final hole with Sliper dormie, and the Hurricane won the final hole to win 2-up.
The final Big Green battle was between junior
Katherine Sung and another Seminole, Alice Hodge, both of whom shot a 13-over 157 yesterday. Hodge got the better of Sung on this day, however, going 5-up after 11 holes before Sung won a pair of holes. But with Hodge claiming another with three to play, she defeated Sung, 4-and-3.
Dartmouth will wrap up play this fall at the Lady Blue Hen Invitational at Rehoboth Beach Country Club, hosted by the University of Delaware, starting on Saturday, Oct. 15.
