REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — The Dartmouth women's golf team finished the fall slate on a high note by winning the Lady Blue Hen Invitational, shattering the program record for a three-round tournament by 15 strokes with a 16-over 880. Freshman
Sophie Thai led the charge with her second 69 (-3) of the weekend, cruising to medalist honors by five strokes with a 69-72-69—210 (-6), also a program record.
The Big Green carded a 291 (+3) as a team to close out the tournament, tied for the low round for the weekend and the best score in relation to par ever at Dartmouth. Thanks to 43 birdies to lead the field, the Big Green finished 11 strokes ahead of 37th-ranked Harvard in second while host Delaware tied Penn for third with an 897 (+33).
Thai, meanwhile, entered the day with a one-stroke lead and was never threatened as she played a nearly error-free round. Birdies on the fourth, seventh, 13th and 17th holes kept the field at arm's length as she built up an insurmountable lead before relaxing on 18 and recording her only bogey of the round. No Big Green golfer had ever played a three-round tournament below par, and she earned her first collegiate win by finishing at 6-under.
No player scored better on the par 3 holes (2-under par) or the par 5s (4-under) than Thai, and only second-place Bridget Hoang of Navy (215, -1) scored better on the par 4s. Thai had 14 birdies in all in the three rounds, five more than any of the other 74 players in the field.
Thai wasn't the only Dartmouth player with four birdies today on the 6,169-yard, par-72 course at Rehoboth Beach Country Club. Freshman
Kim Shen and junior
Katherine Sung sank four as well with Shen shooting a 1-over 73 and Sung a 2-over 74. Both wrapped up the tournament tied for 10th with a 7-over 223.
Another freshman,
Hope Hall, also had a strong weekend by tying for 13th, just one stroke behind Shen and Sung with a 3-over 75 on the day. Her round consisted of 13 pars and a birdie.
Senior
Samantha Yao had two birdies as well while carding a 4-over 76, tying for 42nd at 17-over par (233).
Dartmouth will return in February to continue its season and vie for its first Ivy League Championship.
