The Big Green drop their fourth straight one-goal game

NEW YORK – The Dartmouth field hockey team looked poised to pick up a big Ivy League victory on Friday night, holding a 1-0 lead in the final minute, but Columbia scored twice in the final 45 seconds of regulation to hand the Big Green a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat on Friday evening. Bronwyn Bird gave Dartmouth a 1-0 lead early in the fourth before the Lions' late charge.

"We're disappointed, frustrated," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "We thought we were so close to walking out of here with what we came for. To be in the situation we were in, up by one with a minute to go, it's a sign that we need to figure out how to maintain our composure in those moments. It's growth we need to go on as a team, but it's something that the girls seem determined to get right. And I think if we can keep that determination in what we do, we can figure it out."

A defensive game saw just 15 combined shots over the first three quarters, only seven of which were on goal. Late in the first quarter, Holley Cromwell had a glittering chance on a tip in the circle that looked like it may loop over Columbia goalkeeper Katie Wimmer, but Wimmer made the save.

Dartmouth goalkeeper Hatley Post fought off the best chance of the second quarter for either side, as in the final five minute of the stanza, she made an incredible diving save going back towards the cage. It led to Columbia's first corner of the game, but preserved the scoreless tie.

The Big Green were strong in the third, firing the game's only three shots on goal in the period. Two of them came in the final 1:13 as Wimmer stopped chances from Bird and Lila Browne.

Dartmouth converted its first shot of the fourth into a 1-0 lead, as on its second consecutive penalty corner, Bird's shot slipped past Wimmer with just over 10 minutes on the fourth-quarter clock. Florentina Terra and Cromwell picked up the assists.

From there, the Big Green defense didn't allow a shot on goal until the final minute, but that's when the Lions pulled off the improbable finish.

Columbia pulled even with 45 seconds remaining as Elizabeth Brissette scored on a tough angle from the end line. In the final seconds, the Lions desperately attempted to get the ball in the circle, leading to a hard shot from Lily Baker with four seconds on the clock, giving Columbia the 2-1 victory.

Final shots were 11-10 in favor of Columbia, but the Big Green held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. Dartmouth also finished with a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Post made two saves while Wimmer posted six.

The Big Green will return to the field on Sunday when they travel to Vermont to face the Catamounts. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. on AmericaEast.TV.
