PHILADELPHIA — The Dartmouth volleyball team picked up its fourth consecutive win and its first at Penn since 1999 with a 3-0 victory (30-28, 25-15, 25-21) Friday evening at the Palestra.
Â
Dartmouth (14-5, 6-3) battled to a 30-28 victory over the Quakers (2-17, 1-8) in a marathon first set before cruising in the second and coming from behind late in the third.
Â
Amelia Gibbs and
Bomi Ogunlari led the Big Green attack, both notching 12 kills with hitting percentages well over .400.
Makenzie Arent and
Karen Murphy equaled one another with 17 assists, while Murphy added 11 digs for her third double-double of the season. Ogunlari racked up five blocks, and
Emma Engstrom recorded 18 digs.
"It's really rewarding to come here and get a win; it was one of our goals for the season," said head coach
Gilad Doron. "I'm really proud of the players, especially the way we started. Defensively we improved as the game progressed and we had timely kills. It was an all-around great team effort tonight."
Â
Dartmouth trailed by as many as six in the opening set, but continually chipped away at Penn's lead and eventually battled to a 22-22 tie. Six more ties ensued before the Big Green were able to claim the set on Ogunlari's back-to-back kills, 30-28.
Dartmouth began to climb back early in the set with a five-point run, including Engstrom's pair of aces. Gibbs came up with crucial swings down the stretch to keep the Big Green within striking distance. They faced set point at 24-23 and were kept alive by
Ellie Blain's kill. Â
Â
Dartmouth consistently kept the Quakers out of rhythm in the second set and cruised to a 25-15 victory after taking an early lead. Consecutive kills by
Ava Roberts and Murphy helped the Big Green claim an 11-5 advantage. Following Blain's ace,
Taite Ryan strung together a block and a kill to put Dartmouth ahead 22-14. Gibbs' winner preceded a Penn error that closed the game.
Â
The Big Green held off Penn's late surge in the third set to secure the victory. The Quakers seemed poised to force a fourth after their five-point run, which culminated in the hosts leading 20-18. Dartmouth responded by claiming eight of the final nine points, including a seven-point run up to the final tally. That stretch was highlighted by two Blain kills, along with one from Gibbs.
Â
The Big Green wrap up the weekend Saturday at Princeton. Opening serve is set for 5 p.m. and the match will stream live on ESPN+.
