WORCESTER, Mass. — Rainy conditions plagued a Tuesday night tilt between the Dartmouth men's soccer team and Holy Cross. The Big Green remained unbeaten in road matchups, battling to a scoreless draw with the Crusaders.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Dylan Buchanan registered a shutout in his first collegiate start, making four saves for the Big Green. Across the pitch, Holy Cross' Kyle Mather also recorded a clean sheet in his first start for the Crusaders.
Offense was hard to come by throughout the match, as both teams combined for seven shots on goal and just two corner kicks.
"I give our guys a lot of credit. They battled and fought for 90 minutes and got another shutout, which was great," Bobby Clark Head Coach of Men's Soccer
Bo Oshoniyi said. "It was great to see Dylan (Buchanan) get those minutes. But our standards are higher than this, we need to create chances and score goals."
Buchanan made a save in the fourth minute to kick off his first collegiate start. Holy Cross' Nick Hupe was given a yellow card in the opening moments of the match following a collision with
Kasper Karlsson.
Dartmouth attempted to create pressure in the first 20 minutes of play, as shots from
David Alino,
Louis Weisdorf and
George Altirs missed their intended target.
In the 32nd minute, Holy Cross generated its best chance of the opening half in the 18-yard box.
Trevor Gee was able to disrupt Evan Jones' shot, which was then corralled by Buchanan to keep the match scoreless.
A free kick from Weisdorf set
Orrett Maine up for a shot in the waning moments of the half, which was stopped by Mather. At the half, the Big Green outshot the Crusaders 7-4, but the match remained scoreless.
Rain impacted conditions at Linda Johnson Smith Stadium as the second half began. Neither team could generate offense in the first 10 minutes of the frame.
Dartmouth spent a significant time in the attacking third but could not challenge Mather with shots on goal. Holy Cross took two shots in the first 15 minutes of the second, neither of which reached Buchanan.
Gee took Dartmouth's first shot of the second half in the 82nd minute, which whistled high and wide of the goal. Holy Cross challenged Dartmouth's defense moments later, but the attempt was thwarted to keep the match scoreless.
Buchanan came up large for the Big Green in the dying minutes of the match, as a great chance just outside the 18-yard box was turned away. Alino made one final attempt to give Dartmouth a victory in the 89th minute, but the chance was blocked in front by a defender.
Following Tuesday's draw, Dartmouth moves to 6-0-4 against the Crusaders in the all-time series.
The Big Green head to Philadelphia for an Ivy League matchup against Penn on Saturday, Oct. 8. Dartmouth and the Quakers kickoff at 5 p.m. and the match will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
