Hatley Post finishes with 19 saves, the most in NCAA Division I field hockey this season
PRINCETON, N.J. — Senior Hatley Post stood tall in goal, finishing with a career-high 19 saves, as the Dartmouth field hockey team stayed within striking distance until the final seconds in a slim 1-0 loss at No. 8 Princeton on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers scored 8:14 into the game, but then Post and the Big Green defense shut the door the rest of the way. Dartmouth also had some strong offensive pressure, including a glittering second-quarter opportunity that ended with a Princeton defensive save.
"Coming into today, we said there were going to be some things tactically that would be important, but the most important thing was that we could not afford to walk off the field and feel that we had been outworked," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "We put a lot of 'new' into our group this week. We changed some things tactically, but the work rate for the full 60 minutes was what stood out the most. To see them work hard, work hard together and be a really connected team was super. Obviously, to give up as many penalty corners as we did (16) wasn't quite the plan. But that's an area where we've been looking to make sure we make strides in how we deal with those, and I think they did a wonderful job of that today."
The Big Green held Princeton to its fewest goals in an Ivy League home game since the Tigers scored one on Oct. 20, 2018 against No. 9 Harvard. It was Princeton's fewest goals at home against an unranked Ivy League team since Oct. 25, 2014.
Dartmouth shut-out Princeton for the game's final 51:46, marking the Tigers' longest scoreless streak since Oct. 23, 2021 at Harvard. It was Princeton's longest scoreless streak at home since Sept. 26, 2021 vs. No. 2 Rutgers (57:50).
On Saturday, Post made three early saves before the Tigers turned their second penalty corner into a 1-0 lead at the 8:14 mark.
From that point forward, Post would stop the next 16 shots sent her way. She made six second-quarter saves, and Dartmouth had a strong offensive chance to pull even in the final five minutes of the half. Boau-Lilly Shepherd was sprung in on goal in transition, but Princeton goalkeeper Robyn Thompson made an aggressive play before Payton Altman's follow-up chance was saved on the goal line by Tigers' defender Autumn Brown.
Final shots were 27-2 in favor of Princeton while the Tigers held a 16-0 edge in penalty corners. Post's 19 saves were the most by a Dartmouth goalkeeper since Isabella Santucci had 20 on Sept. 13, 2019 at No. 19 Boston College. It was also the fewest goals allowed by any goalkeeper nationally with at least 19 saves since Boston College's Jonna Kennedy stopped 21-of-22 sent her way against Syracuse on Apr. 10, 2021.
"I've known since I got here that Hatley is a really strong goalkeeper and we're starting to see her become a really strong leader," said Eggner. "The way she coordinated our defensive penalty corner unit and our defense in front of us, we're seeing that person shine through.
"That was a stellar performance. I haven't seen something like that in a long time."
"This group is determined to get their first Ivy League win," said Egner. "While today isn't quite that, I think today is a sign we can definitely do it this year. We have the opportunity to come back and try again on Friday against another top team."

The Tigers entered the day No. 5 nationally in scoring offense (averaging 3.32 goals per game). In the end, Dartmouth allowed its fewest goals against Princeton since a 2-1 win against the Tigers on Sept. 17, 2011. That was the Big Green's last win against Princeton, as Saturday marked Dartmouth's smallest margin of defeat in the all-time series since that game. It was also the Big Green's fewest goals allowed at Princeton since Sept. 22, 1990, a 1-0 defeat.How flexible is Hatley Post?! The fourth quarter saw just two total shots, both by Princeton and both saved by Port.
