Dartmouth picks up the program’s first-ever win in the state of Texas
SAN ANTONIO – The Dartmouth men's basketball team jumped out to as much as a nine-point second-half lead on Sunday night before holding off UTSA for a hard-fought 78-77 overtime victory on day two of the 210 San Antonio Shootout. The Roadrunners rallied to force the extra session, where they took as much as four-point advantage, but the Big Green scored seven of the game's final nine points and held strong defensively for their first road victory of the season.
With the win, Dartmouth improves to 2-4 while UTSA falls to 4-3 with the loss.
Sophomore Ryan Cornish led the Big Green offense with career highs in points (21) and rebounds (9), along with four assists – his final assist coming to senior Cam Krystkowiak with 1:08 left in the extra session, which proved to be the difference.
"I thought we had really good preparation," said Dartmouth head coach David McLaughlin. "When you're in a tournament and you're playing multiple games in multiple days, it's hard to really prepare the right way. I thought our guys prepared both mentally and physically, and our coaching staff had us ready on a short turnaround. I thought we played a very, very disciplined game of basketball.Â
"Especially to have the number of turnovers we had in 45 minutes of play was great, and making our free throws," McLaughlin continued. "The little details that allow you to win games on the road."
In a clean game from both sides, Dartmouth had just 10 turnovers, one game after turning the ball over 21 times on the same court. UTSA turned the ball over only eight times.
Along with Cornish's 21 points, senior Dame Adelekun posted 15 points, six boards and three assists. Freshman Jackson Munro had 10 points, the third time in the last four games in double figures. Junior Izaiah Robinson provided a big spark off the bench with eight points and three assists, knocking down 3-of-4 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Making his first-career start, freshman Brandon Mitchell-Day had six points, including an early emphatic dunk, in which he was fouled.
Cornish began the night with a 3-pointer on the game's first possession, and the Big Green wouldn't trail the entire first half. The score was tied at six before five consecutive Dartmouth points, capped off by a Krystkowiak corner three following stellar ball movement, gave Dartmouth an 11-6 lead with 13:58 on the first-half clock.
The Big Green advantage remained between one and five for much of the remainder of the half, until a Munro 3-pointer with 4:26 remaining in the first gave Dartmouth a 27-21 lead.
UTSA rallied to within one following a John Buggs III 3-pointer with 1:20 on the clock, which trimmed Dartmouth's lead to 29-28, but the Big Green ended the half with six straight points. Sophomore Cade Haskins and Robinson each knocked down 3-pointers in the final 1:01 to give Dartmouth a 35-28 halftime advantage.
The UTSA lead reached three with 12:33 remaining, but a few minutes later, the Big Green had an answer. Senior Jackson Blaufeld provided a spark off the bench, recording consecutive Dartmouth field goals in the span of 38 seconds, as part of a 6-0 Big Green surge. A Blaufeld fastbreak layup, off a Cornish assist, gave Dartmouth a 57-49 lead with 8:16 on the second-half clock.
Dartmouth quickly returns to action on Monday for the final game of the 210 San Antonio Shootout. The Big Green will face Grambling State at 4 p.m. EST (3 p.m. locally).

From there, UTSA slowly chipped away. Dartmouth maintained at least a three-point advantage until a pair of UTSA free throws with 1:45 remaining made the margin two, 66-64. A Germany layup with 1:07 on the clock evened the score at 66. The Roadrunners began the extra session with seven of the first 10 points to open a 75-71 advantage, but a Munro 3-pointer with 2:57 on the clock got Dartmouth within one. Less than a minute later, two Cornish free throws pulled the Big Green within 77-76. For the game, the Big Green shot 43.5 percent from the floor (27-of-62), including 34.6 percent from 3-point range (9-of-26). UTSA finished at 42.4 percent (28-of-66) and 34.8 percent from behind the arc (8-of-23).
