SAN ANTONIO – After jumping out to a 6-0 lead, Grambling State responded with a 23-4 run and the Tigers wouldn't look back, defeating the Dartmouth men's basketball team, 73-49, on Monday to wrap up the 210 San Antonio Shootout hosted by UTSA. Turnovers hurt the Big Green, as they surpassed 20 for the second time in three games, finishing with 21 on Monday. Sophomore
Ryan Cornish led the offense with 13 points, one game after scoring a career-high 21 in Sunday night's overtime win over the host Roadrunners.
Â
With the loss, Dartmouth falls to 2-5 while Grambling State improves to 4-3.
Â
The Big Green were without multiple rotation players on Monday due to injury. Along with Cornish's 13 points, freshman
Jayden Williams scored seven points (all coming in the second half). Making his first start of the season, senior
Cam Krystkowiak also scored seven points to tie a season high, while grabbing a team and season-high six rebounds.
Â
"One of the biggest challenges for us today was going to be taking care of the basketball against a different defense, a pressuring defense," said Dartmouth head coach
David McLaughlin. "We just didn't do it consistently enough in the game, and I thought we played more of their game than our game. When you're talking the fourth day of a tournament, third game in four days, less than 24 hours between games, you really have to come in and stick to the game plan and stick to who you are."
Â
Four Tigers' players scored in double figures, led by 15 points apiece from Cameron Christon and Virshon Cotton.
Â
Dartmouth began on a strong note, scoring the game's first six points, which included a
Dame Adelekun layup and Cornish 3-pionter. However, the Tigers responded with the next 11 points and 23 of the next 27. The Big Green went 5:27 without scoring and struggled with just four points in 9:47. Despite those struggles, a
Jackson Blaufeld turnaround jumper got Dartmouth within 23-12 with 7:08 left in the first half.
Â
Grambling State's lead reached as much as 17 on two occasions, but a Blaufeld 3-pointer with 1:24 on the clock pulled the Big Green within 34-20 at the half. Blaufeld provided a spark off the bench for a second straight game, scoring all five of his points in the first 20 minutes.
A Cornish floater to begin the second half got Dartmouth within 34-22, but Grambling State slowly built its lead back, reaching 20 (45-25) with 12:51 remaining. The Big Green answered with a 6-0 surge, beginning with four points from Cornish and ending with an
Izaiah Robinson layup, to pull within 45-31.
The margin stayed between 14 and 18 for the ensuing minutes until a late Grambling State surge helped it reach, and exceed 20 again. The Tigers' biggest lead, 24, came at the final horn.
Â
"Part of the reason of doing a tournament like this is to learn about your group," said McLaughlin. "We have an extremely young group, a lot of young guys playing significant minutes. We still have to form an identity of who we are. We're still in that process of figuring that out.
Â
"We have to make some significant strides at both ends of the ball, and we'll do that," McLaughlin continued. "This was just a part of that journey to figure out who we are and the team we want to be."
Â
For the game, Dartmouth shot 34.7 percent from the floor (17-of-49), including 20.0 percent from 3-point range (6-of-30). Grambling State finished at 48.3 percent (28-of-58) and 41.7 percent from behind the arc (5-of-12). The Big Green turned the ball over 21 times to the Tigers' 13. Grambling State held a 40-28 edge on the boards.
