LONG BEACH, Calif.— The Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to UC Irvine, 72-57, on the final day of the Beach Classic on Saturday afternoon at Long Beach State's Walter Pyramid.
Dartmouth dropped to 2-10 on the season, while UC Irvine improved to 7-3.
Mekkena Boyd, who scored in double figures in both games of the Beach Classic, led Dartmouth with 14 points and was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Clare Meyer was a consistent presence in the paint and finished with a career-high 10.
Victoria Page and
Carrington Washburn were both 3-of-3 from downtown. Hunter Hernandez and Naomi Hunt paced the Anteaters with 20 and 18 points respectively.
The Big Green mustered just five points in the first quarter against a tough UC Irvine defense that ranks among the nation's best in steals per game. Page's 3-pointer represented Dartmouth's first points of the game after facing an early 7-0 deficit. Digging deep defensively in the final minute, the Big Green forced a turnover and scored on the other end with Meyer's fastbreak layup.
UC Irvine extended its lead in the second quarter, but Dartmouth found more success offensively as Boyd scored five of the team's 12. Page's second triple of the afternoon allowed the Big Green to crack double digits, but the Anteaters continued their work in the paint and led by 20 with just under five minutes remaining until the break. An Amelia Scharpf 3-pointer had UC Irvine on top, 36-15, before Boyd sank a jumper at the buzzer.
Dartmouth shot 64.3 percent from the field in the third quarter, but wasn't able to gain any ground on the Anteaters after facing a 19-point deficit at halftime for a second-straight game. Boyd opened the second-half scoring with a 3-pointer from the corner, and despite a much-improved offensive flow from the Big Green, UC Irvine stretched its lead behind a 4-of-5 showing from the perimeter. The Anteaters held a 62-37 edge at the end of the quarter after Hernandez's trey with seconds remaining.
The fourth quarter belonged to Dartmouth and Washburn was the catalyst. The junior gave the Big Green a spark with back-to-back 3-pointers, which immediately followed her block. Washburn was once again good from deep with just over a minute remaining. The Big Green outscored the Anteaters 20-10 in the final quarter.
Up next for Dartmouth is a date with No. 12 Iowa, the defending Big Ten champion, on the road Wednesday, Dec. 21. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. EST (2 p.m. CT) and the game will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus. Fans can listen to the game Sirius XM channel 134/195 and the Sirius XM app on channel 957.
