IOWA CITY, Iowa — The Dartmouth women's basketball team fell, 93-54, to No. 13 Iowa on the road Wednesday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the Big Green's penultimate non-conference game.
The Hawkeyes improved to 10-3, while the Big Green dropped to 2-11.
Dartmouth was stymied by Iowa's hot start and the Hawkeyes didn't look back, despite a strong third quarter that saw the Big Green outscore the defending Big Ten champions. Wednesday's game served as a homecoming for senior co-captain
Emma Koch, who hails from Iowa City.
Dartmouth was paced by
Allie Harland's efficient 11 points. The senior was 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from behind the arc.
Olivia Lawlor, who was 3-of-4 from the field, followed with nine.
Clare Meyer made her second career start, first since the season opener, and grabbed a career-high seven rebounds and posted a team-high three assists.
Reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and 2021-22 All-American guard Caitlin Clark scored 20 for the Hawkeyes and racked up a game-high 10 boards. Forward Monika Czinano equaled Clark with 20 points, going 10-of-14 from the field.
The Hawkeyes built a commanding lead in the first quarter behind a 83.3 shooting percentage, eventually holding a 34-19 advantage heading into the second. 3-pointers in the final two minutes of the quarter by Harland,
Victoria Page and
Mia Curtis gave Dartmouth some life after trailing 24-4 with just over three minutes remaining.
Clark was perfect in two trips to the line in the opening minutes of the second to put the Hawkeyes back on top by 20. Lawlor answered the Preseason All-American's 3-pointer with a triple of her own on the ensuing possession and
Grace Niekelski scored in the paint after a Big Green defensive stop, but the lead would extend to 30 by halftime. Dartmouth went to the locker room with a scoring drought of 6:27.
The third quarter belonged to the Big Green, who outscored the Hawkeyes, 17-15. Harland knocked down two of her three treys in first few minutes and
Anna Nelson canned one from deep midway through the quarter as the hot shooting continued. Dartmouth frequented the charity stripe in the closing minutes of the third as
Mekkena Boyd, Lawlor and Niekelski each made at least one trip to the line.
Iowa kept its foot on the gas through the fourth quarter and held a 37-point edge after Czinano's jumper Dartmouth wouldn't come within 30 again as the Hawkeyes cruised to a 92-54 final.
The Big Green are back in action on Wednesday, Dec. 28 to visit UMass. The game, which marks the final non-conference date of the season for Dartmouth, will air on NESN and ESPN+. Ivy League play begins Sunday, Jan. 1 at Cornell.
