Dartmouth wins for the third time in the last four games, all coming in the last six days
HANOVER, N.H. – Trailing 28-27 late in the first half, the Dartmouth men's basketball team ended the half on a 13-0 run – and doubled up CSU Bakersfield 52-26 the rest of the way – in picking up a convincing 79-54 victory on Saturday afternoon in Leede Arena. With its third win in the last four games, the Big Green improve to 4-5 while the Roadrunners fall to 4-4. Sophomore Ryan Cornish led Dartmouth in scoring for the third time in the last four contests, finishing with 18 points on the afternoon.
Saturday marked the Big Green's largest margin of victory against a nonleague Division I opponent since a 77-44 win at Maine on Dec. 11, 2019. It was also Dartmouth's biggest nonleague DI win at home since topping Maine the year prior in Leede Arena, 78-52.
"The ability to care of the basketball [was key]," said head coach David McLaughlin, who picked up his 50th career win at Dartmouth. "We talk about sharing the juices, moving the ball. That, and having a tough defensive mindset, allowed us to really have that complete game today."
The Big Green have now won three straight home games for the first time since February of 2019.
Along with Cornish's 18 points, junior Dusan Neskovic returned from injury and impressed, posting 17 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Senior Dame Adelekun filled up the box score with 14 points and 14 rebounds for his fourth-career double-double and first this season, along with two steals, two emphatic blocks and a game and career high five assists. Sophomore Romeo Myrthil scored a career-high 11 points while adding a team-high three steals, two rebounds, two assists and a big chasedown block at a time when CSU Bakersfield was trying to rally.
A back-and-forth start saw Dartmouth open an early 8-3 lead behind a pair of Cornish 3-pointers. But CSU Bakersfield came back to pull even at nine and 11 before later taking its first lead at 15-14 following an Ivan Reynolds second-chance layup with 10:47 left in the first half.
That's when Dartmouth took over in a big way. After an Izaiah Robinson jumper, Neskovic completed a 4-point play then Adelekun scored four straight points and Neskovic ended the half with a 3-pointer as the first-half clock expired. In the end, the Big Green took a 40-28 lead into the locker room.
Midway through the half, the Roadrunners used a 9-2 run to pull as close as 13 at 59-46 with 8:32 still remaining. However, in less than two minutes of action, Dartmouth turned a 61-48 lead into a 68-48 advantage via Myrthil's second 3-pointer of the afternoon, two Neskovic free throws and an Adelekun layup. That made the score 68-48 with 6:10 on the clock.
If there was any doubt, Dartmouth erased it with nine straight points to take a 77-50 lead, on the way to the 79-54 final and the program's first-ever victory against CSU Bakersfield (the Big Green had been 0-3 all-time).
"We certainly want to shoot threes in our offense," said McLaughlin. "If you look at the threes today, a lot of them came from inside our offense, where the ball's hitting the paint, there are drives, there are reversals and the ball's hitting the post. If you can get threes like that, those are the threes you want to take. I think a majority of our threes were that, and it showed in our assist-to-made-basket ratio (17 assists on 27 made field goals). That's a sign of moving the ball and taking great shots."
Dartmouth rounds out its three-game homestand, and pre-holiday home slate, with a big showdown vs. Vermont on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Fans can purchase tickets in advance by clicking here. The game will be televised on NESN and streamed on ESPN+.

The 13 made threes tied a season high, done two other times this season – including last time out vs. NVU-Johnson. CSU Bakersfield finished at 40.4 percent (23-of-57) and 25.0 percent from behind the arc (3-of-12).
