Dartmouth’s three-game home winning streak is snapped
HANOVER, N.H. – Visiting Vermont ended the first half on a 13-0 run to take a commanding 41-21 halftime lead and wouldn't look back, downing the Dartmouth men's basketball team 68-52 on Tuesday evening in Leede Arena. With the win, the Catamounts improve to 5-7 while the Big Green fall to 4-6. Senior Dame Adelekun led Dartmouth with a team-high 17 points, as the only Big Green player in double figures. Following three consecutive home games, Dartmouth now hits the road for four straight, beginning on Friday night at Central Connecticut State.

The Catamounts shot 65.4 percent from the floor in the first half. Dartmouth held them to 39.3 percent shooting in the second, but it was too little, too late.

"They had a four guard lineup and played with space, they played with pace and they were attacking at different angles," said Dartmouth head coach David McLaughlin. "What they're really good at as an older team and a well-coached team is they're not just attacking you with the dribble, but they're attacking you with cuts as well. So as you go into help, the cuts are coming from the corners, the cuts are coming from the wings… We talked about this going into the game, but we just didn't do a good enough job in the first half with it."

Adelekun was 7-of-14 from the field. One game after a career-high 11 points, sophomore Romeo Myrthil added nine points on 4-of-4 shooting. Adelekun and Myrthil were a combined 11-of-18 from the floor; the rest of the team was 10-of-37.

"I thought Dame had some good minutes," said McLaughlin. "He had multiple guys around him at all times. He's someone who plays with energy. We coach him hard, so I probably am over-critical of him sometimes. But he continued to bring it. We want to play through him; that's very important for us. Not just for him to score, but for him to pass the ball."

Aaron Deloney led Vermont in scoring with 17 off the bench. Dylan Penn also had 14 for the defending America East Champions.

A tight start saw neither team lead by more than two until a Penn driving layup gave the Catamounts a 12-8 lead just over six minutes in.

An alley-oop from Cornish to Adelekun on Dartmouth's first second-half possession was an early highlight. Exactly one minute later, Adelekun completed a 3-point play to pull the Big Green within 17 at 43-26, but that's as close as they would come until the final seconds.

"We have to make sure we're giving the message to the guys tomorrow in terms of how we need to get tougher and how we need to play more disciplined basketball," said McLaughlin.

The Big Green return to the court on Friday when they travel to Central Connecticut State. Opening tipoff against the Blue Devils is set for 7 p.m.

From there, Vermont slowly built its lead, reaching double figures at 22-12 with 9:40 on the clock. That score stood for nearly three minutes, as UVM's lead reached 12. Five straight Dartmouth points, via a Myrthil layup and Cornish 3-pointer, got the Big Green within 28-21 with 3:50 on the first-half clock. For the game, the Big Green shot 38.2 percent from the floor (21-of-55), including 20.0 percent from 3-point range (4-of-20). Vermont finished at 51.9 percent (28-of-54) and 40.0 percent from behind the arc (6-of-15). The Catamounts held a 34-28 edge in rebounds. One bright spot for Dartmouth was taking care of the ball, finishing with a season-low nine turnovers.
