Dartmouth falls for the first time this season when leading at the half

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — The Dartmouth men's basketball team ended the first half on a 13-2 run to take a three-point lead, but Central Connecticut State outscored the Big Green, 37-25, in the second, as the Blue Devils were victorious on Friday evening, 59-50. CCSU used a 9-0 late second-half surge to turn a one-point margin into a 10-point lead, and Dartmouth couldn't recover. The Big Green struggled from the floor, which included just 7-of-34 from 3-point range.

With the loss, the Big Green fall to 4-7 on the season. The Blue Devils improve to 1-9.

Sophomore Cade Haskins led Dartmouth in scoring with 12 points, all via 3-pointers. Classmate Ryan Cornish added 10 points, all in the second half. For the second consecutive game, sophomore Romeo Myrthil grabbed a career high in rebounds. He finished Friday with a team and career high seven boards. Senior Dame Adelekun tallied a career-high four blocks on the evening.

Preseason All-NEC honoree Nigel Scantlebury led CCSU with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Dartmouth jumped out to an early 6-2 lead behind a 3-pointer from Haskins and three consecutive points from junior Dusan Neskovic. After Kellen Amos got the Blue Devils within 6-4 with 16:31 on the clock, neither team scored for nearly seven minutes.

Scoring picked up over the final 10 minutes of the first half. Two Neskovic free throws gave Dartmouth a 10-8 lead, but the Blue Devils responded with 10 of the next 14 points — including seven straight — to take a 20-12 lead with 4:25 on the first-half clock.

The Big Green had an answer, ending the half on a 13-2 run. It began with a Neskovic dunk following a great pass from freshman Jackson Munro, who finished with a game and career-high five assists. Haskins went on to make a pair of 3-pointers, including one to put Dartmouth ahead 25-22 in the final minute, which proved to be the halftime score.

Cornish began the second half with a basket to extend the run to 15-2, but nine consecutive CCSU points quickly put the Blue Devils back in front, 31-27.Over the ensuing minutes, neither team led by more than four. Dartmouth retook a pair of leads at 38-37 (following a Haskins trey) and 40-39 (after a Myrthil layup) with 9:38 left in the second half.

However, Tre Breland responded with a 3-pointer to help CCSU retake the lead, and the Blue Devils wouldn't trail the rest of the way. A Cornish trey got Dartmouth within 44-43 with 6:38 remaining, but CCSU scored nine straight points in the span of just over a minute, to take its first double-figure lead. The Big Green couldn't get any closer than seven the rest of the way.

For the game, Dartmouth shot 30.6 percent from the floor (19-of-62), including 20.6 percent from 3-point range (7-of-34). CCSU finished at 34.4 percent (22-of-64) and 22.2 percent from behind the arc (4-of-18). The Blue Devils had a 47-42 edge in rebounds.

The Big Green continue their four-game road trip on Tuesday when they travel to Boston University to face the Terriers. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
