Setting the Scene
Looking to bounce back from consecutive losses, the Dartmouth men's basketball team continues its four-game road swing on Tuesday when the Big Green travel to Boston University to face the Terriers. Gametime is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+. Most recently, Dartmouth dropped a 59-50 final at Central Connecticut State on Friday, as the Blue Devils broke open a tight one-point game with a 9-0 late second-half run.
Â
After a strong stretch of winning three of four — highlighted by an overtime win at Conference USA foe UTSA and a convincing 25-point victory against CSU Bakersfield out of the Big West — the Big Green dropped a home game vs. Vermont (68-52) and Friday's road contest at CCSU. Dartmouth struggled from the floor on Friday, shooting a season-low 30.6 percent overall (19-of-62) and just 20.6 percent from 3-point range (7-of-34). That percentage marked the Big Green's second lowest of the season.
Â
Dartmouth used a 13-2 run to end the first half to take a 25-22 halftime lead, but the Blue Devils outscored the Big Green, 37-25, over the final 20 minutes. In Dartmouth's last four games, there have been significant runs by one of the teams to end the first half. Along with Friday's 13-2 Big Green run, Vermont ended the first half on a 13-0 run (Dec. 6), Dartmouth ended the first half on a 13-0 run against CSU Bakersfield (Dec. 3) and the Big Green posted a 14-0 run to end the first half against NVU-Johnson (Nov. 30).
Â
Sophomore
Cade Haskins led Dartmouth with 12 points on Friday behind four 3-pointers (he finished 4-of-14 from behind the arc and 4-of-16 overall). Sophomore
Ryan Cornish scored all 10 of his points in the second half, finishing in double figures for a team-high eighth time in 11 games this season. Freshman
Jackson Munro was a strong facilitator, posting a career and game high five assists. Senior
Dame Adelekun had a career-high four blocks, marking the most for a Big Green player since
Chris Knight posted four on Feb. 8, 2019 at home vs. Cornell. It was also the most by a Dartmouth player on the road since Knight had four on Nov. 11, 2017 at Quinnipiac. Adelekun leads the Ivy League in overall blocks (18) and blocks per game (1.64).
Â
Boston University out of the Patriot League will mark the ninth different Division I conference Dartmouth has faced this season (Tuesday will be the Big Green's 10th game against a Division I opponent). The only conference Dartmouth has played twice this season is the America East (Vermont and Bryant).
Â
With a win...
- Dartmouth would improve to 23-9 all-time against Boston University, but beat the Terriers for just the second time in its last six tries.
- The Big Green would beat a member of the Patriot League for the first time since the 2018-19 season, when they beat both Loyola Maryland on the road (82-80) and Boston University (78-68). Since that season, Dartmouth has only played BU out of the Patriot League, falling both in 2019-20 and 2020-21.
Â
Last Time Out
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (12/9/22) — The Dartmouth men's basketball team ended the first half on a 13-2 run to take a three-point lead, but Central Connecticut State outscored the Big Green, 37-25, in the second, as the Blue Devils were victorious on Friday evening, 59-50. CCSU used a 9-0 late second-half surge to turn a one-point margin into a 10-point lead, and Dartmouth couldn't recover. The Big Green struggled from the floor, which included just 7-of-34 from 3-point range.
Â
Scouting Boston University
Boston University comes in at 6-5, including a perfect 3-0 at home. The Terriers' home wins have come against Northeastern (72-63), Johnson & Wales (96-51) and Hartford (102-66). BU played three of its four games at home and has played seven straight away from Case Gymnasium entering Tuesday's matchup. BU is coming off a 72-70 win at Marist as
Walter Whyte scored the go-ahead putback with 3.8 seconds remaining. Whyte, a graduate student, leads the team in scoring (14.2) while
Jonas Harper is second averaging 10.0 points per game.
Ethan Brittain-Watts is averaging 9.1. Whyte also leads the Terriers in rebounding (6.4) while Brittain-Watts owns a team-leading 23 assists.
Â
Last season, BU finished 22-13 and 11-7 in the Patriot League. The Terriers lost a pair of first team All-League honorees in
Sukhmail Mathon and
Javante McCoy, but Whyte — a three-time All-League honoree — was named preseason All-Patriot League. Boston University was picked second in the league's preseason poll.
Â
All-Time Against The Terriers
Dartmouth leads the all-time series against Boston University, 22-9, but the Terriers have won four of the last five, including two straight. After a 78-68 home win for Dartmouth in 2018, Boston University picked up slim wins of 78-76 and 65-62 in each of the last two seasons. Prior to that 2018 meeting, the teams hadn't met since 2002, a 65-53 BU win in Hanover. The teams first met on Feb. 11, 1925, a 47-30 Big Green victory. Dartmouth won the first eight all-time meetings and 14 of the first 15.
Â
3-Point Prowess
Dartmouth knocked down double-figure 3-pointers in three of the first four games of the season (11 at Fordham, 10 vs. Bryant and 13 against MCLA). That made it seven times in eight games with 10+ treys dating back to the end of 2021-22. (The Big Green had nine at Quinnipiac in game four.) It marked the first time the Big Green had double-digit made threes in their first three games of the season since 2018-19.
Â
Dartmouth made 13 treys in consecutive games vs. NVU-Johnson and CSU Bakersfield. The 26 made threes were the most since the start of the 2021-22 season at Georgetown (16) and hosting NVU-Lyndon (14). It was also the first time with 13+ made threes consecutively since those two contests.
Â
Overall, the Big Green have reached double-figure made threes in five of 11 games this season. Dartmouth's 9.4 made 3-pointers per contest stand 39th nationally and second in the Ivy League.
Â
Block Party
Dartmouth's 4.5 blocks per game are tied for first in the Ivy League (with Yale). Each has 49 blocks in 11 games. Individually, senior
Dame Adelekun's 18 blocks and 1.64 blocks per contest are tops in the league. He's had three or more blocks three times, including a career-high four at Central Connecticut State. The four blocks marked the most for a Big Green player since
Chris Knight had four on Feb. 8, 2019 at home vs. Cornell. It was also the most by a Dartmouth player on the road since Knight had four on Nov. 11, 2017 at Quinnipiac.
Tough Schedule
Dartmouth's nonleague schedule has been challenging, with the nine Division I opponents thus far posting a combined 56-42 record (following games Dec. 11). Every team has a .500 or better record, except three. The Big Green's first three DI opponents of the year (Fordham, Bryant and Quinnipiac) are currently a combined 29-6.

Big Green in the Lone Star State
Dartmouth picked up a 78-77 overtime win at UTSA on Sunday, Nov. 27, marking the program's first-ever win in the state of Texas. The Big Green also played Incarnate Word in the 210 San Antonio Shootout, as the Cardinals and Roadrunners marked the fifth and sixth Texas schools Dartmouth has ever played (the others being Houston, Rice, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech). There are 24 current Division I men's basketball programs in the state. Dartmouth is now 3-5 all-time against Texas schools, also owning wins over Houston (Dec. 12, 1957 at home by an 84-64 final) and Texas A&M (Dec. 17, 1989 by a 64-51 final).
Â
Welcome to Dartmouth!
Head coach
David McLaughlin announced in August the addition of three student-athletes in the Class of 2026 —
Brandon Mitchell-Day,
Jackson Munro and
Jayden Williams.
Â
Mitchell-Day, a 6-8, 205-pound forward from Creve Coeur, Missouri, was the conference player of the year for Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day (MICDS) this past winter, scoring over 1,000 points in his prep career. Twice he was named all-state and all-district, and he played AAU ball for Gateway Basketball on the Under Armour Rise Circuit.
Â
A 6-8, 220-pound forward from Wilmette, Illinois, Munro is a product of New Trier High School, which he helped advance to the Illinois State Sectional finals by averaging around 16 points and nine rebounds a game. The Chicago Sun-Times First Team All-State selection was also a two-time All-Central Suburban League performer and named the New Trier/Thanksgiving Tournament MVP. On the AAU circuit, he made a name for himself playing with Fundamental U.
Â
Williams, a product of Windermere Prep in Florida, was All-Florida First Team this past year along with all-district and All-Region 3 honors to his name. The 6-6, 185-pound wing averaged about 18 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest, helping the Lakers post a 20-8 record during the season. He also played AAU ball as a member of 1Family.

Captains Revealed
Last May, Dartmouth men's basketball head coach
David McLaughlin revealed the three captains that will lead his squad during the 2022-23 season — rising seniors
Dame Adelekun,
Jackson Blaufeld and
Cam Krystkowiak.
Â
Adelekun, a 6-8, 220-pound power forward from Gastonia, North Carolina, emerged as a force in the frontcourt when Ivy League play began at the beginning of the calendar year. Injuries had limited him to just 15 games in his career while averaging just over one point. But in conference games last winter, he produced 10.6 points and 8.2 rebounds per game over the 14 contests while shooting 63.6 percent from the floor and blocking a team-high 10 shots. Those numbers led to him earning the team's Rudy LaRusso '59 Award as the most improved player as well. A 6-4, 195-pound shooting guard from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania,
Blaufeld may have seen limited action during his career with just 17 games under his belt, but he is one of the most positive and vocal teammates the Big Green have ever seen. His work ethic in practice is unmatched, whether he is putting in extra time to improve his own game or helping his teammates get better with his intense energy and dogged determination when matching up against them.
Krystkowiak, the son of former NBA player Larry Krystkowiak, is working on making a name for himself as the third captain for the Big Green next season. The 6-9, 210-pound power forward from San Diego, California, finally got a chance to play this past winter after missing his entire freshman season due to an injury. With the skills to play in the post and on the perimeter, he showed what he could do right out of the gate with nine points in the season opener at Boston College and five more with four rebounds in the win at Georgetown, including his first 3-pointer. But it was his 20-point performance in a six-point loss at California that put all of his talent on display.
