HANOVER, N.H. — In a game of runs, the Dartmouth women's basketball team fell to UAlbany, 73-45, Tuesday afternoon at Leede Arena.
The Big Green dropped to 1-7 on the season, while the Great Danes, the defending America East champions, evened their record at 5-5.
Dartmouth faced a 40-21 halftime deficit, but fought back with a 17-0 run to open the third quarter, eventually cutting the UAlbany advantage to just two points. The run, kickstarted by
Victoria Page's back-to-back 3-pointers, was quelled by Karyn Sanford's triple, marking the beginning of a 12-1 quarter-ending run by the Great Danes. Albany slammed the door on Dartmouth in the final quarter, outscoring the Big Green 21-6.
Grace Niekelski led Dartmouth with 13 points, marking her third-straight game in double figures.
Olivia Lawlor followed with eight, while
Emma Koch grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. UAlbany was paced by Helene Haegerstrand's 18 points, along with 16 by her running mate, Ellen Hahne. The Great Danes shot 56.5 percent from the field, including 45 percent (9-of-20) from downtown to the Big Green's 30.4 percent from the field.
The two sides battled to an 11-11 stalemate in the first quarter. Dartmouth took a 6-5 lead on Niekelski's first bucket of the day, a 3-pointer, and the sophomore scored again on the ensuing possession. An
Allie Harland triple in the final two minutes of the quarter put the Big Green on top, 11-9, and Ellen Hahne's score evened the game heading into the second quarter.
UAlbany dominated a lopsided second quarter to outscore the Big Green, 29-10, going 4-for-5 from the perimeter and 90 percent from the field. The Great Danes opened the quarter with a 10-0 run before
Karina Mitchell's offensive rebound and putback stopped the bleeding. Another 3-pointer by Niekelski followed as Dartmouth was within five, but UAlbany regained control for the remainder of the first half.
Facing a 19-point deficit, the Big Green caught fire out of the locker room as Page provided a spark with back-to-back triples on the opening possessions of the third quarter. Niekelski and Mitchell furthered the momentum with buckets down low, and
Mekkena Boyd drove to the hole to make it a seven-point game. Lawlor's 3-pointer from the corner, right in front of the Dartmouth bench, caused UAlbany to take a timeout as Dartmouth was within four, 40-36.
Out of that timeout, Mitchell stole the inbounds pass before dishing to
Mekkena Boyd for a layup to come within two. The Great Danes scored their first points of the half at the 4:21 mark of the third quarter as Lilly Phillips went to the line. Sanford stole the Big Green's momentum with her 3-pointer, part of a 12-1 run that ended the quarter. Boyd's layup at the 4:47 mark of the third quarter was Dartmouth's last field goal until the 7:19 mark of the fourth.
Trailing 52-39 to start the fourth, Dartmouth was stymied over the game's final 10 minutes. The UAlbany lead stretched to 20 by the 6:57 mark of the fourth as Haegerstand sunk a pair of free throws. The Big Green shot just 16.67 percent from the field in a Great Dane-dominated fourth.
Dartmouth returns to action Saturday at Monmouth. The non-conference matchup is set for 2 p.m. and it will be streamed on FloSports.
