WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. —
Victoria Page scored a career-high 25 points as the Dartmouth women's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season, 71-56, over Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at the OceanFirst Bank Center.
The Big Green are now 2-7 on the season, while the Hawks dropped to 5-5.
"I'm so proud of the women – it was a total team effort and Victoria had an amazing performance," said
Adrienne Shibles, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach. "We executed the game plan and played with confidence and poise. This road win is evidence of the growth and togetherness of this team and I am eager to see them continue to rise!"
Dartmouth held a 39-36 advantage at halftime before outscoring Monmouth, 19-6, in the third quarter to take control of the Saturday matinee. In addition to Page's 25 points, the Big Green were bolstered by
Emma Koch and
Olivia Lawlor, who scored nine apiece. Koch grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to finish a point shy of a double-double. Page's career scoring effort came as the sophomore went 3-of-6 from downtown, 10-of-19 from the field, and 2-of-2 at the line. Dartmouth shot a season-high 47.6 percent from the field and held Monmouth to a 33.3 percent clip.
The Big Green had their best offensive quarter of the season in a hot start, which powered the visitors to an early 24-14 lead. Page set the tone early, opening the scoring with her first of three triples and scored again as the Big Green had the game's first five points. Monmouth bounced back to take an 8-7 edge, but
Karina Mitchell's bucket quickly put Dartmouth back on top after a short drought. Koch showed her range, knocking down a 3-pointer on the next possession. Dartmouth connected on four from beyond the arc as
Mia Curtis and
Allie Harland followed suit in the final minutes of the quarter.
Another Page triple was Dartmouth's response to bring the lead back to double-digits after Ariana Vanderhoop's bucket to open the second quarter. Monmouth made a run to cut the lead to one, 27-26, before Page scored in the paint to help Dartmouth regain its composure. Niekelski's bucket with just over a minute remaining in the half had the Big Green back on top by six, 39-33, but Vanderhoop's 3-pointer brought the Hawks within three heading into the break.
Held to just six points in the third quarter, the Hawks shot just 17.7 percent from the field, while Dartmouth continued finding key buckets from Page and company. After seeing the lead cut to one in the opening minute of the quarter, Page knocked down her third 3-pointer of the afternoon to kickstart a 19-4 run. She finished the dominant quarter with 11 points, while Harland, Curtis and
Grace Niekelski added to the onslaught. The Hawks were held scoreless from the 6:52 mark until the Vanderhoop's basket with 41 seconds remaining.
Olivia Lawlor scored inside on a well-executed give-and-go, drew a foul, and knocked down the free throw in the opening minute of the fourth to give the Big Green a 17-point edge, 61-44.
Dartmouth's lead grew to 21 when Koch notched back-to-back buckets, including a fastbreak layup off Niekelski's steal. The Big Green comfortably hung on in the final minutes for the 71-56 win.
Next, Dartmouth returns to Leede Arena to host Drexel on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at noon. More than 1,000 local elementary students will fill the bleachers as the program hosts its annual Education Day. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ with Bob Lipman and Lori McBride on the call. An audio broadcast will be available through the Dartmouth Athletics website with Justin McIsaac calling the action.
