ITHACA, N.Y. – After 12 ties and 15 lead changes, a reverse layup by
Mekkena Boyd with 13 ticks remaining in overtime handed Dartmouth women's basketball a 67-64 win over Cornell on Friday evening.
Before the end of the game,
Allie Harland added two free throws for insurance. She had a career-high 15 points after hitting a trio of 3-pointers and three shots from the charity stripe. Boyd was right behind with 13 points, having gone 6-12 in field goals. The Big Green had a 33-31 advantage in defensive rebounds.
Dartmouth (3-20, 2-9) at Cornell (8-13, 3-7)
There were three ties by the time Harland's 3-pointer knotted the game at 9-all with 4:46 remaining in the first quarter. From there, the Big Green went on an 8-0 run over a two-minute span, highlighted by Harland's second trey. The Big Red got back on the board with a pair of free throws, ending the run almost five minutes after it started. A last-second Cornell layup made it a four-point game heading to the second (17-13).
The home team started the second hotter than the first, making it 13 in a row since Dartmouth last scored and moving ahead by five in the first five minutes.
Carrington Washburn's shot from the charity stripe opened scoring for the Green with 3:37 to go. A 3-pointer got the visitors within two, but Cornell answered with one of its own not long after. Washburn added one more before the end of the first half (26-22).
Nine seconds into the third,
Katie Douglas added her second 3-pointer to get within one, but seven straight Big Red points gave them a seven-point cushion. Two Harland 3-pointers within 30 seconds suddenly made it a one-point ball game with five minutes gone. A beautiful driving layup from
Mia Curtis gave the lead to Dartmouth for the first time since early in the second quarter. Two lead changes and three ties later, the score was 38-38 heading to the fourth.
There were five lead changes and three ties in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. A third trey from Douglas and a swisher by Curtis kept Dartmouth ahead by two before a 5-0 Cornell run gave the home team a three-point advantage, but Washburn's free throws got the Big Green back within one point. Five straight points from Boyd put the Green up by four with 2:35 to go. A 4-0 Cornell run tied the game at 58-58 with 16 seconds remaining. A missed Dartmouth shot in the final seconds sent the game to overtime, a first for the Green this season.
Three points from
Jimena Abejon and a basket from Boyd gave Dartmouth a five-point edge before Cornell chipped four of those points away while heading for the final minute of overtime. Two made free throws put the Big Red ahead, 64-63, before Boyd's winning layup with 13 ticks remaining put Dartmouth back in the driver's seat. When Harland was fouled in the final two sets and hit both free throws, the home team tried to tie the score again, but ran out of time (67-64).
Dartmouth will take on Columbia at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
