RICHMOND HILLS, Ga. — The Dartmouth women's golf team competed in the Ford Invitational hosted by Yale at Ford Field & River Club with fellow Ivy League school Columbia and finished the two rounds in third place at 62-over par (638). Yale (585, +9) won the tournament that was set to include Monmouth, but it was forced to withdraw at the last minute. The Lions carded a 31-over 607 to finish second.
The Big Green golfers found the course difficult the first time around, struggling with the short game at times. Freshman
Claire Xu shot an 80 (+8) to lead Dartmouth in the opening round, but the scores improved in the afternoon.
Sophomore
Penelope Tir had the biggest turnaround, shaving 10 strokes from he first tour of the course, carding a 3-over 75 to finish with a 160 (+16) for the tournament. Sophomore
Katherine Sung had the lowest score overall, matching Tir's 75 in the second round to finish 10th with a 13-over 157. Xu dropped a stroke to wrap up the day with a 159 in 13th, while senior
Kristen Chen had identical 81s to finish 15th with a 162.
Yale's Ami Gianchandani took medalist honors by shooting even par and also had the low round of the day with a 69 (-3) to start the day. The Bulldogs claimed all five of the top spots on the leaderboard with Columbia taking the next four.
"Right now it's just good to get outside and compete, and especially good to see the improvement from the first round to the second," said Carolyn A. Pelzel '54a Head Coach of Women's Golf. "We played well but were too sloppy in the scoring areas. We are going to have to improve our up-and-down ratio, and we will be looking to improve our short game during our spring trip."
After getting in practice round tomorrow, Dartmouth will fly back to Hanover. Next up for the team is the spring trip with numerous practice rounds as well as the Bama Beach Bash in Gulf Shores, Alabama, on March 20-22, co-hosted by UAB and South Alabama.
