HANOVER, N.H. – Every team member scored as the Dartmouth women's basketball team beat Brown, 58-54, at Leede Arena on Saturday afternoon, picking up its first Ivy League win of the 2021-22 season.
Doreen Ariik led the way with a double-double, scoring a career-high 11 points while also pulling down 10 caroms. Senior
Jimena Abejon had a season-high 10 points. The team went 9-12 in free throws and won the rebounding game, 43-29, including an outstanding 20 offensive boards.
"This first Ivy League win was special for many reasons,"
Adrienne Shibles, the Gail Koziara Boudreaux '82 and Family Head Coach of Women's Basketball said after her first conference victory. "I am most proud of the way that each and every player contributed to the effort. The squad has improved so much over the course of the season, and this outcome was evidence of their hard work, faith and togetherness."
Dartmouth (2-18, 1-7) vs. Brown (5-15, 0-8)
There were three ties and three lead changes in the first five of the opening quarter. With Brown up by four, buckets from Abejon and
Rosie Jennings tied the score at 11, but the Bears pulled ahead by five and looked to keep that lead going into the second. The Green had other plans and back-to-back 3-pointers from
Karina Mitchell and Abejon – the last coming with two ticks left – gave the edge back to the home team (17-16).
Brown took control at the start of the second quarter with a 5-0 run before a pair of
Victoria Page swishers tied things up at the midway point. Two layups from the Bears within 30 seconds of each other once gave them some breathing room, but only briefly; a trey from
Allie Harland with three minutes remaining made it a one-point game. Abejon's jumper with eight seconds to go gave the Green their first lead of the second, while Isabella Mauricio responded with one second left to give the Bears a one-point lead (29-28).
An
Emma Koch bucket 75 seconds into the third was the eighth lead change of the game.
Carrington Washburn's 3-pointer added insurance, only to have Brown add a layup and get back within one point with 4:22 left on the clock, 35-34. A well-timed foul resulted in Ariik's first two foul shots of her career, while Abejon made it to nine points and gave Dartmouth a five-point advantage. After keeping Brown quiet for over four minutes, the visitors had a layup in the final minute to end the third (39-36).
There were five lead changes and one tie in the first half of the fourth quarter. A pair of jumpers by Ariik in less than a minute handed the lead back to Dartmouth. A Brown free throw made it a 49-48 game, while Page's bucket added two more points with 81 seconds left. Ariik hit one foul shot, Page had two to extend the lead to four with 39 ticks left. Mauricio hit two more treys to make it known that the game wasn't done, but one more free throw from Page did it (58-54).
The Big Green and the Bears will get a rematch in three days in Providence, playing on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
