AIKEN, S.C. — After struggling in the opening round of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate hosted by USC-Aiken, the Dartmouth men's golf team shook off the rust from a long winter and shaved 13 strokes in the second round to finish the day with a 307-294—601 (+41). Freshman
Justin Lee had the low round of the day for the Big Green, shooting even par on the 6,617-yard, par-70 course at the Palmetto Golf Club in the afternoon.
South Carolina, ranked 43rd in the nation, sits atop the leaderboard with the final round still to come tomorrow at 3-under par (557), 10 stroke ahead of Virginia.
Lee, making his collegiate debut, carded a 9-over 79 in his first tour of the course without a birdie to his credit. He seemingly got over any jitters he may have had in his second round, sinking five birdies to even out the five bogeys and leave him at even par for the round and 9-over for the day, tying him for 48th in the 75-player field.
Senior
Charles Petrie nearly matched Lee hole for hole throughout the 36 holes, posting a 79 (+9) in the first round and a 71 (+1) over his second 18. His first round included a birdie and 10 pars, while his afternoon round brought four birdies and 10 more pars to his ledger, putting him a stroke behind Lee in a tie for 53rd at 10-over par.
The Big Green player with the most birdies on the day was sophomore
Alex Gu, who dropped six (three in each round) to tie for 60th with a 153 (+13). Freshman
Eli Kimche made par on 13 of the 18 holes to start the day, including his final six of the opening round, then added two birdies to go with eight pars during the second round to card a 14-over 154. Team captain
Jason Liu played the back nine quite well at 1-over par over the two rounds, but he found the front nine much more difficult as he closed the day tied with Kimche in 64th place.
Dartmouth will look to climb a few rungs on the leaderboard from its spot in 15th in the final round when play resumes tomorrow morning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
