AIKEN, S.C. — Dartmouth graduate and captain
Jason Liu recovered from a difficult second round to card a two-over 72 on the final day at the Palmetto Golf Club on Tuesday. His performance helped the Big Green shoot a 296 (+16) in the third round, leaving them in 15th place.
The 43rd-ranked South Carolina Gamecocks won the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate by 10 strokes, closing out play with a 5-under 275 today to finish a combined 8-under for the three rounds. Virginia matched South Carolina's round today, leaving them in second place at 2-over par, while VCU was 10 strokes behind the Cavaliers in third.
Liu played a consistent round with a dozen pars and a pair of birdies on the 6,617-yard, par-70 course. One of those birdies came on the 550-yard, par-5 14th, his fourth birdie of the tournament on the two par-5 holes. His best round allowed him to inch up four spots on the leaderboard into a tie for 60th at 16-over par (226).
Freshman
Justin Lee nearly matched Liu today with a 3-over 73. He started a little slowly after shooting even par in round two, bogeying four of his first six holes, before catching fire with three birdies and six pars on the next nine holes. Overall, he was the Big Green's leader for the three rounds at 12-over par (222), good for a tie for 45th.
Senior
Charles Petrie tied Liu for the tournament with a 226 (+16) while carding a 6-over 76 on the day. Like many of his teammates, he found the front nine (+5) more difficult than the back (+1).
Most of the day was a bit of a struggle for sophomore
Alex Gu, but he finished with birdies on two of his final three holes to bring his final round total to 75 (+5). For the tournament, he produced an 18-over 228, tying for 64th.
Only three players finished the three rounds under par, led by South Carolina's Ryan Hall (-10) and Jack Wall (-5). Hall had the best round of the tournament with a 6-under 64 over the first 18, while Wall's 65 (-5) today was second best.
Dartmouth will return to the links on March 20 when it plays the first of three rounds at the ECU Intercollegiate at Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, North Carolina.
Note: Liu's 4-under showing on the par-5 holes was among the best in the 75-player field; only five players were 5-under.
