Baseball and Softball take both honors this week
Throw the ball, catch the ball, hit the ball. Spring is the season for the diamond sports. Senior Brooke Plonka threw two straight shutout games for the softball team in a series win over Ivy rival Princeton on the road. At the plate for the Big Green baseball team, sophomore Tyler Cox had a career-high four hits in five at-bats against Penn.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named the DartmouthSports.com Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Brooke Plonka, Sr., Marilla, N.Y., Pitcher, Softball
A native of Marilla, New York, Plonka dominated the opposition in her three complete games, allowing just one run on nine hits over 20.0 innings with a pair of shutouts of the Ivy League leader, Princeton. The left-hander first earned a 4-1 win over Holy Cross last Wednesday, surrendering the one run on five hits without a walk while striking out eight. She got better as the week went on, spinning a three-hit shutout with eight more strikeouts in the second game on Saturday as Dartmouth earned a doubleheader split with a 2-0 victory. The very next day, Plonka stepped into the circle again and was even better, yielding just one hit while fanning five in recording her second straight shutout in an 8-0 triumph, clinching the series win.
Tyler Cox, So., Valley Glen, Calif., IF, Baseball
Cox, a sophomore from Valley Glen, California, earned his honor for the second time this season as he was nearly unstoppable in the batter's box during the three-game series at Penn this past weekend. First, he rapped out three hits and drove in a run in the opener, then went 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases, plus scored both Big Green runs in a 2-1 victory. In the series finale, Cox collected a career-high four hits in five trips to the plate with a pair of two-run doubles, matching his personal best with four RBIs in a tough 10-9 loss. All told, Cox hit .643 (9-for-14) in the series with two doubles, two runs, five RBIs and two stolen bases. He also boosted his season average 45 points to .417, making him the Ivy League's leading hitter.
