HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth Black Student-Athlete Alliance (DBSAA) has been announced as the winner of one of five Social Justice Awards at the college.
Â
Founded in 2020 by men's basketball's Garrison Wade '22 and volleyball's Tola Akinwumi '21, the 10-member group is the recipient of the Student Organization Award, which honors a student association for its commitment to promoting social justice both in the Dartmouth community and beyond.
Â
DBSAA's vision is to create a space on campus in which Black student-athletes are comfortable. It is dedicated to fostering a sense of community, inclusion and mentorship for Black athletes enrolled at Dartmouth, giving the students a place to actively address the pressing issues of racial inequality on campus and in the country.
Â
The Social Justice Awards were established in 2002 by the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee and were created to recognize individual, alumni, faculty, staff and student groups for their commitment to causes of social justice, civil rights, peace, education, public health or environmental justice.
Â
This year's ceremony, Toward Social Justice, will feature keynote speaker Martin Luther King III. King's father spoke to an overflow crowd in 105 Dartmouth Hall on May 23, 1962, the same day of this year's event honoring the changemakers attending and working at Dartmouth.
Â
The free event will take place at 7 p.m. in Spaulding Auditorium. Tickets are available on the Hopkins Center website.
