PURCHASE, N.Y. — Graduate
Jason Liu and freshman
Eli Kimche each carded a 3-over 74 during the first round of the Ivy League Men's Golf Championship on Friday, helping Dartmouth finish the day in fourth place at 22-over par (306). Yale completed the 18 holes with a 10-stroke lead over Harvard with an 8-over 296 on the 7,023-yard, par-71 course at the Century Country Club.
Liu and Kimche are tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard as the former was one of three players to drop and eagle during the round, while the latter sank a team-high three birdies. Bulldog teammates Blake Brantley and Ben Carpenter are tied atop the standings with a 1-over 72 as the duo combined for 28 pars on the day.
Liu, a four-time team captain who earned second-team All-Ivy honors at the last league championship in 2019, struggled out of the gate with four bogeys in his first six holes. But his day quickly turned with his eagle on the 477-yard, par-5 eighth. On the back nine, he picked up birdies on the 10th hole (a long par-4 at 453 yards) and the par-5 15th to put him atop the leaderboard before a double bogey on the par-3 17th left him tied for fifth.
Kimche provided a big lift for the Big Green as he had just seven collegiate rounds under his belt and had not played in a tournament since early March. The rookie reached the turn at even par with birdies on the third hole (377-yard par-4) and the eighth right before Liu had his eagle. Kimche stumbled briefly on the back nine with a pair of bogeys and a double before righting his ship with a birdie on 15 and making par on the final three holes.
Senior
Charles Petrie was in good shape through 12 holes with nine pars and a birdie to sit at 1-over. But a pair of bogeys and two doubles dropped him into a tie for 19th overall at 7-over par, though he still had a team-high 11 pars in his round.
The Turner brothers, fifth-year senior James and senior Mark, both carded a 9-over 80 on the day to end the round tied for 27th. The elder Turner turned the corner with two birdies on his last three holes, while the other played better on the back nine with a birdie and five pars to his credit.
The second round will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, though Dartmouth will tee off beginning at 10:50, paired with fifth-place Columbia, which is just one stroke behind the Big Green.
