RINGOES, N.J. — Sophomore
Katherine Sung carded a 1-over 73 to finish the first round of the Ivy League Women's Golf Championship tied for fourth, helping Dartmouth end the day in fourth place at 18-over par (306). The Big Green were bolstered by junior
Samantha Yao who shot a 75 (+3) to also grab a spot in the top 10, tying for eighth.
Columbia took the lead after 18 holes with an 8-over 296, four strokes ahead of Princeton. Third-place Harvard sits just one stroke ahead of the Big Green, while Penn and Yale are both a single stroke behind Dartmouth in the crowded field of six.
Both Sung and Yao got off to strong starts on the windy day at the 6,173-yard, par-72 course at The Ridge at Back Brook. Sung birdied each of the first two par-5 holes and was 2-under through eight before a bogey on nine left her with a 35 (-1) at the turn. Yao, meanwhile, birdied the very first hole, a 350-yard par-4, then birdied the par-5 fifth to play the first six at 2-under. Although she had bogeys on seven and eight, she finished the front nine at even par.
On the back nine, Sung added seven more pars and a pair of bogeys to her round, finishing with her 1-over 73. Yao nearly matched that finish with six pars and three bogeys, wrapping up her day with her 3-over 75.
Dartmouth's other three golfers all struggled out of the gate. Senior
Kristen Chen was 4-over through four holes while sophomore
Penelope Tir and freshman
Claire Xu were 4-over after three. Tir stemmed the tide with a birdie on the 377-yard par-4 fourth hole and Chen birdied the 362-yard, par-4 sixth. Xu steadied herself with pars on each of the final four holes on the front nine, reaching the turn at 5-over par, as did Chen while Tir was 6-over.
Chen added three more birdies on the back nine, giving her four for the round, bested by only one other player in the field, finishing out the round with a 6-over 78, tying her for 18th. Xu continued her steady play with seven more pars, carding an 80 (+8) to tie for 23rd, and Tir tied for 28th with an 11-over 83.
Yale's Ami Gianchandani and Princeton's Yanjun Liu were the only players to break par with a 71 (-1) to tie for first while Columbia's Taylor Zeng placed third at even par.
The second round of the tournament will tee off at noon on Saturday with Dartmouth playing with Yale and Penn.
