RINGOES, N.J. — Sophomore
Katherine Sung was one of three players with the low score of the final round at the Ivy League Women's Golf Championship, helping her climb seven places into a tie for third with a 6-over 222, matching the best finish by a Dartmouth women's golfer at the event. Her play led the Big Green to the second-best total of the day and its best ever at the tournament with an 8-over 296, finishing the three rounds tied for fourth with Yale at 38-over par (902) but only 10 strokes behind the champion, Princeton.
The 902 is the lowest score ever for the Dartmouth women's golf team at the Ivy League Championship, and its 10-stroke deficit is its second-best behind only the 2019 team that placed second, six strokes off the pace.
Sung wasn't the only Big Green player to card her best score of the tournament at the 6,174-yard, par-72 course at The Ridge at Back Brook. Sophomore
Penelope Tir sank a team-best five birdies to go with eight pars to shoot even par to make the biggest move on the leaderboard, jumping nine places into a tie for 16th with junior teammate
Samantha Yao at 13-over (229).
The day began with a birdie for Sung on the 350-yard, par-4 first hole, which was followed up with a bogey on two. The rest of her round was nearly error-free with 13 pars, birdies on a pair of 533-yard par-5 holes (7 and 14) and just one more bogey to make up her 1-under 71.
Tir, on the other hand, started off her day with a pair of bogeys on the first three holes. Birdies on the 377-yard, par-4 fourth and the par-5 seventh brought her back to even par, but she fell back to 2-over with bogeys on 8 and 10. Again she rallied with birdies on the 11th and 14 holes, both of which were par 5, then added another on the 176-yard, par-3 15th. After two more pars, she closed with a bogey on 18, bringing her back to even on the day.
The Big Green's next best score of the final round was supplied with Yao, who produced a 4-over 76. She played the front nine even with a birdie and seven pars, then recovered from a double bogey on 10 with four straight pars. Alternating bogeys and pars on the final four holes left her with her 76.
Senior
Kristen Chen also played the front nine at even par with birdies on six and nine, both par-4s, before concluding her day with a 5-over 77 to finish up in 19th place at 14-over par (230).
One day after sinking five birdies, freshman
Claire Xu dropped two more en route to a 7-over 79, closing the tournament tied for 20th with a 16-over 232.
Princeton's Yanjun Liu took home medalist honors by shooting even par (71-72-73—216), five strokes ahead of Columbia's Jennifer Wang.
Notes: Other Big Green golfers to finish third at the championship are Catharine Roddy in 2017 and Kaitlyn Lees in 2019 … Chen and Tir led Dartmouth with eight birdies in the three rounds, tied for fifth most among the field of 30 players, while Sung and Xu each had seven … Yao made par on 36 of the 54 holes, tied for fifth most as well.
