HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth softball team (20-24, 14-7) defeated Cornell (17-23, 7-14), 4-0, in Ivy League action on Sunday afternoon at Dartmouth Softball Park to close out the 2022 season.
Â
Billie McFadyen finished with two hits for the Big Green, while
Emily Lipsett,
Kate Farren, and
Leila Hennessy each had one. Hennessy had an RBI double along with a stolen base.
Brooke Plonka and
Madie Augusto combined for the shutout, allowing just four hits with two strikeouts.
Â
Allison Kerce went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Big Red while Katie Hale and Avery Wagner each had one hit. Mia Burd and Gabrielle Maday combined to give up four runs and five hits while striking out two.
Â
The Big Green opened the scoring in the second inning. Hennessy and
Mary Beth Cahalan both walked to begin the inning. In the next at-bat,
Jenna Brown reached first on a fielding error from Cornell's shortstop to load the bases. Later in the inning, still with the bases loaded,
Maria Angelino hit hard liner to shortstop, Cornell made the play at the third, but Cahalan was able to score to put Dartmouth up 1-0.
Â
Dartmouth added to their lead the next inning after an RBI double down the right field line from Hennessy that sent McFadyen across the plate. The Big Red had their best scoring chance of the day in the fifth inning. Wagner was walked to begin the inning. Wagner advanced to second on the next play, followed by advancing to third on a single to right field from Kerce to give Cornell runners on first and third with just one out. Hanna Crist grounded out to third without Wagner advancing home. On the next play, Plonka forced Olivia Rooney to fly out to Brown in center field to end the inning and preserve the shutout.
Â
Farren delivered an RBI single to left field in the fifth to add to the Big Green lead. Dartmouth put runners on second and third early in the inning due to a throwing error from Cornell's Lilly Travieso and a well-placed sacrifice bunt from
Alaana Panu. With Lipsett on third and McFadyen on second, Farren lined a ball into left field that allowed Lipsett to score.
Â
For some reassurance, Lipsett picked up an RBI in the sixth when she hit a single to left field to send Brown across the plate for a 4-0 Dartmouth lead. Cornell ended with a runner on first and third in the seventh, but Crist grounded out to Angelino to end the game.
