WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — Day one of the 119th Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) National Championship has come to a conclusion with the Dartmouth lightweight varsity four plus cox competing in a time trial early Friday morning.
The boat stroked by
Jack Stone from Providence, Rhode Island, finished third (6:12.423) behind Harvard at 6:09.950 and Navy in 6:10.909. Every boat advanced to the semifinals held Friday afternoon and were seeded according to their finish in the time trials.
In the Big Green's semifinal race, Navy jumped out in front and stayed there while the more compelling race was for the next two spots that would advance to the finals on Saturday. At the 1000m mark, Dartmouth had a three-quarter length lead over Yale. However, Columbia quickly closed the gap, overtaking the Bulldogs and forcing the Big Green to dig deep. The boat not only held off the Lions but gave Navy a run for their money as well, cutting into the lead before narrowly coming up short to claim second (6:18.51 to 6:20.04), followed by Columbia in 6:23.61. Those three will compete for a medal Saturday in the Grand Final at 11:30 a.m.
