Men’s Lightweight Rowing Brings Home Program Best Three Medals at Head of the Charles

BOSTON — The Dartmouth men's lightweight rowing team won a program-best three medals in four events at the 61st Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend. First-year Simeon John won the men's lightweight single, the varsity eight took silver and the club four medaled in a 38-boat field.

"It was a historic day for us at the Charles, and definitely a program best coming back to Hanover with three medals," said head coach Trevor Michelson

John led the way Saturday, winning the men's lightweight single into a stiff headwind on the 3-mile course in his first Head of the Charles for the Big Green.

Also on Saturday, the club four finished fifth out of 38 boats in the men's club fours with a time of 17:46.848 to earn a medal.

On Sunday, the varsity eight (13:55.551) won silver in the men's lightweight eights, finishing second out of nine crews behind the defending national champions.

The lightweight four, an all-first-year crew making its debut for Dartmouth, finished eighth out of 11 boats in the men's lightweight fours with a time of 16:26.312.

"It was a great day for the Dartmouth Lightweights at the HOCR," Michelson said. "Hard to say what I'm most proud of: our club four battling down the course for a medal in a massive field, our first-year Simeon John winning the lightweight single in a blistering headwind, our freshmen four representing Dartmouth for the first time in the lightweight four event, our eight winning a silver medal behind the defending national champions, or the rest of our squad making their way down to Boston to support the group. Three medals in four events put our program's depth on display, and we are excited to get back to work as a team on Tuesday as we continue to prepare for the Sprints and IRA in May."
