HANOVER, N.H. – The Dartmouth women's soccer team shutout Fordham, 2-0, in their season opener on Friday evening at Burnham Field.
Â
"Very excited for the team today," said Stacy and Nick Branca Family Head Coach of Women's Soccer
Ron Rainey. "We did a nice job winning lots of services into the box and had a nice attacking attitude. Good solid goals and ending a game with a shutout was a nice way to start the season."
Â
Aspen Anderson's goal midway through the opening frame gave the Big Green a 1-0 lead before
Aleena Seales secured the result with just over 30 minutes remaining in the game. It is the first career goal for both Anderson and Seales.
Charlotte Cyr made four saves for her first clean sheet of the season.
Â
Kyla King made six saves in goal for the Rams.
Â
Fordham controlled the possession in the early going but the Big Green almost found the breakthrough in the seventh minute when a shot from
Allie Winstanley from the top of the box forced King to make a high-quality tip-save over the crossbar to keep the game scoreless.
Â
Dartmouth ultimately opened the scoring in the 27
th minute. Anderson gained possession just over midfield and played the ball down the wing to Winstanley. Winstanley created space down towards the endline before hitting a low-driven ball to the penalty spot for Anderson to fire in first-time to the top right corner.
Â
The Big Green added to their lead in the 60
th minute through a hard-fought from Seales. After a whipped ball into the box from Winstanley, Seales headed the initial cross but was blocked from a Fordham defender. Seales jumped on the loose ball around the six-yard box and cut back towards the middle before ripping a shot off a Rams' defender and into the back of the net.
Â
Fordham pushed bodies forward to get back into the game, but the Big Green defense stopped the attack with goalkeeper
Charlotte Cyr commanding the box for all 90 minutes to earn the shutout.
Â
Rainey went on to say, "we also loved to see the support we had from fans and other Dartmouth teams today! Looking forward to seeing how we respond at Sacred Heart in our first road game."
Â
Dartmouth hits the road on Sunday for a nonconference tilt with Sacred Heart. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on NEC Front Row.
Â
Notes: Dartmouth has now won each season opener dating back to the 2015 season with today's win making it seven-straight.
