CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — Four members of the Dartmouth women's golf team were named to the 2021-22 Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholars Team as announced by the organization.
A total of 1,485 women's collegiate golfers from all three divisions were recognized with this prestigious honor. Among those named were junior
Samantha Yao, sophomores
Katherine Sung and
Penelope Tir, and freshman
Claire Xu. This is the second time Yao has earned a place on the team.
The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics with the minimum cumulative grade point average being 3.50 for inclusion.
The four golfers played a key role in helping Dartmouth finish tied for fourth at the Ivy League Championship as the Big Green finished just 10 strokes behind the champion, their second-closest showing ever at the tournament.
An All-Ivy League First Team performer with a 3.78 GPA as an economics major, Sung finished third at the Ivy League Championship, matching the best finish ever for a Dartmouth golfer at the event. A native of Palo Alto, California, Sung posted a team-best 75.27 stroke average and finished in the top three in five of her eight tournaments, including tying for first at the Prospect Bay Intercollegiate.
Yao, hailing from Berwyn, Pennsylvania, is also an economics major with a 3.81 GPA and was right on Sung's heels with a 75.52 stroke average. She won the Bama Beach Bash last March in a field of 99 golfers, posting the lowest round in relation to par (-3) in Dartmouth women's golf history, and as an Academic All-Ivy League selection.
Tir (Winnetka, Ill., 3.73 GPA in biomedical engineering) and Xu (Federal Way, Wash., 3.83 GPA undeclared) ranked third and fourth on the team, respectively, in stroke average at 78.41 and 78.55, and both finished in the top 20 at three tournaments for the Big Green in 2021-22.
