HANOVER, N.H. — Phil Steele revealed its preseason All-Ivy League Football Teams with a total of seven Dartmouth players listed on the two squads, featuring quarterback Nick Howard, linebacker Marques White and punt returner Jamal Cooney on the first team.
Howard, a 6-2, 230-pound senior from Green Bay, Wisconsin, was just named to the preseason watch list for the Walter Payton Award yesterday after rushing for 787 yards and 15 touchdowns last year for the Ancient Eight co-champion. While primarily a rushing quarterback last season, Howard is expected to spend more time dropping back to pass this season while still blasting through the line on the ground.
A 6-2, 210-pound native of Glendale, Arizona, White led the Big Green and ranked among the top 10 in the Ivy League with 5.0 sacks and 9.5 tackles for a loss while accumulating 40 tackles from his linebacking position. Cooney, just 5-9 and 150 pounds, hails from Miami, Florida, and proved to be plenty quick and elusive in 2021 by ranking fifth in the nation in punt return average (13.9 yards).
Dartmouth players on the second team include fifth-year running back Zack Bair from Rumson, New Jersey (second on the squad in rushing and third in receiving in 2021), fifth-year right tackle Griff Lehman from Pottstown, Pennsylvania (lone returning starter on the offensive line), senior defensive lineman Shane Cokes out of Dayton, Ohio (32 tackles, 4.0 sacks, 5.5 TFL) and senior long snapper Josh Greene from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida (handled all long-snapping duties in 2021).
Dartmouth, the two-time defending conference champion, opens the 2022 season on Sept. 17 at 1:30 p.m. when the Big Green host Valparaiso at Memorial Field as they begin their quest to extend its league-record 20 Ivy titles. A video stream of the game will be available on ESPN+ (subscription required) with Matt Corsetti calling the action, along with a free audio broadcast featuring Brett Franklin and Wayne Young '72 through the official website of Dartmouth Athletics, DartmouthSports.com.
