HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team suffered the first loss of its season to the LIU Sharks by a score of 2-0. The Big Green outshot LIU throughout the contest but fell in their home-opener.
Andre Puente of LIU opened the scoring in the first half on a bicycle kick in the 29th minute, and an 86th minute goal from the Sharks sealed the match. The Big Green registered 19 shots, nine of which were on goal.
Alex van Schalkwyk put three shots on goal in just 50 minutes of action, while
Kristian Feed made two attempts at LIU's Gianluca Cersosimo's net but was turned aside twice by the Sharks' keeper. Cersosimo posted a nine-save clean sheet in his debut with LIU.
The Big Green put pressure on LIU throughout the opening stages of the match. Dartmouth registered its first shot on goal in the eighth minute of play as van Schalkwyk challenged Cersosimo for the first time. Another shot from van Schalkwyk was put on target about halfway through the first 45 minutes, which was also turned aside.
Puente was handed a yellow card in the 27th minute but was undeterred, as the junior scored the first goal of the match on a bicycle kick inside the 18-yard box moments later. His goal was assisted by a pair of Sharks and the Big Green trailed 1-0 heading into the half.
Shots from
Trevor Gee and
Kristian Feed were put on goal in the opening minutes of the second half, neither of which equalized the game. Dartmouth continued to put pressure on the Sharks with shot attempts as the game carried on.
Andrew Ellis, Eric Schaleben and
Daniel Coons all made attempts to score in the final ten minutes of play as the Big Green pressed forward, looking to tie the contest. However, a goal in the 86th minute from LIU's Emil Jaaskelainen sealed the match for the visitors.
Dartmouth is set for another match at Burnham Field this Tuesday, September 13, against the UMass Minutemen. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. and the contest will be streamed on ESPN+ and Stretch Internet internationally.
Notes:
-Dartmouth outshot its opponent for the first time this season, registering 19 shots to LIU's 10. The Big Green also put nine shots on goal, while LIU was limited to three.
-The Big Green led in possession for the first time in 2022, controlling the ball 56 percent of the time against the Sharks.
