HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team dropped its second-straight match on Tuesday night, as the Big Green were bested by the UMass Minutemen at Burnham Field. The Big Green created opportunities throughout the contest, but three goals from the Minutemen sealed the win for the visitors.
Sophomore
Kristian Feed scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the 32nd minute. This was not enough to lift Dartmouth (1-2-1, 0-0-0 Ivy) to victory, as three goals from UMass (5-0-1, 0-0-0 A10) in the first half and a long weather delay were too much for the Big Green to overcome.
The Big Green challenged UMass' goalkeeper, Matt Zambetti, as
Ben Jenkins,
James Wilson and
Andrew Ellis all recorded a pair of shots on goal.
Costi Christodoulou made five saves in his fourth complete game this season.
Christodoulou opened the evening with a save on UMass' first shot on goal in the 13th minute. Moments later, the Minutemen got on the board, as Alec Hughes lifted a shot over Christodoulou to take a 1-0 lead.
Hughes added his second goal of the night in the 21st minute, as a header off a corner gave the Minutemen a two-goal advantage.
As the rain began to pick up, Feed made a stellar single-man effort to cut the UMass lead to one. The Sandnes, Norway native put the ball past Zambetti with his left foot with 13:43 remaining in the first frame.
A lightning-delay began before UMass was able to kick the ball off following Feed's goal. The delay persisted for two hours and five minutes before play was able to resume.
The delay did not deter the Minutemen, as UMass reclaimed a two-goal lead in the 44th minute, as a header from Brad Moccio sent Dartmouth into the half with a 3-1 deficit to overcome.
Jenkins and
Louis Weisdorf were handed yellow cards in the first 25 minutes of the second half. The Big Green put five shots on goal in the final 45 minutes of play but were unable to trim into UMass' lead as time expired.
Dartmouth fell to 27-8-4 against the Minutemen in the all-time series and dropped just its second match in 21 outings in Hanover.
The Big Green travel for a Saturday night match against the Albany Great Danes on September 17. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
