PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. — The Dartmouth men's golf team closed out its season-opening competition on Sunday following the second round of the Cornell/Temple Invitational.
Mark Turner led the Big Green on day two of the event with a team-low score of 71 (+1) as Dartmouth ended the weekend ranked seventh in a field of 15 teams.
Host team Temple closed out the tournament with at 1-over par to win the competition, followed by Rhode Island, who closed out day one with a lead at the 1912 Club. Ivy League clubs Penn, Columbia and Cornell rounded out the field's top five.
The Big Green finished the weekend with three eagles, the most of any team in the field. Turner recorded two, one yesterday and one today, while
Eli Kimche recorded the team's third eagle today on a par-5 12th. Dartmouth ended the competition with a combined score of 585 (+25).
"We had a good first event. The guys came out nervous yesterday and got behind the eight ball, but really hung in there," Bill Johnson Head Coach of Men's Golf
Rich Parker said. "We had tough conditions today with wind and fast greens."
Turner and
Justin Lee once again led the way for Dartmouth on Sunday. Turner made improvements on his performance on Saturday, as he recorded an eagle on a par-5 3rd that he bogeyed a day prior.
Lee finished his day with a score of 72 (+2), good for the second-best score for the Big Green. He recorded three birdies on the front nine and closed out the tournament tied for 12th in the field, alongside Turner. Both Dartmouth representatives finished their weekends with scores of 143 (+3).
Kimche finished his day with a one-stroke improvement compared to his score a day ago and concluded his time in Plymouth Meeting tied for 39th in a field of 84 players.
Alex Gu ended his second round with a combined score of 149 (+10), one stroke behind Kimche.
Eli Thrasher closed out round two with a six-stroke improvement compared to his performance yesterday. Thrasher, who competed as an individual, and
Charles Petrie both ended the Cornell/Temple Invitational tied for 61st in the field.
"
Justin Lee and
Mark Turner played great and Kimche, Lee and Gu have really improved since last season," Parker said. "Once we get the freshmen going, it could make for some really good play this year. Hosting next week will be fun for our kids. All in all, it was a productive trip for the team"
The Big Green are set to host the Dartmouth Invitational at Montcalm Golf Club in Enfield, N.H. on Saturday, Sept. 25 and Sunday, Sept. 26.
