Dartmouth allowed just three goals over the game’s first 56:16

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Dartmouth field hockey defense stood tall through the game's first 56 minutes, allowing just three goals to the nation's No. 4 scoring offense, but 11th ranked Syracuse scored three goals in the game's final 3:44 to beat the Big Green, 6-0 on Sunday afternoon. A combination of eight saves from Hatley Post, along with strong defense in front of her, helped keep Syracuse at bay for long stretches, but the Orange proved too much in the end. Dartmouth will return home on Saturday for its Ivy League home opener, hosting Brown who is led by former Big Green standout goalkeeper Britt Broady '01.

"We knew that obviously, today was going to be difficult," said Dartmouth head coach Mark Egner. "Any team in the ACC is going to be strong. Syracuse is a team we expected to control the ball very well. We knew we'd have to be solid defensively and play structured hockey, and we did that for long portions of the game. The last few minutes, we lost some attention to detail defensively and Syracuse made some adjustments, which is a testament to their ability and testament to our girls' defending to cause them enough problems to need to adjust."

Dartmouth allowed a single goal in each of the first three quarters, coming at 7:52, 19:01 and 43:00. The third was a rocket of a shot off a penalty corner. The Big Green didn't allow a Syracuse penalty corner until 24:58 into the contest and only one in the game's first 36 minutes, but the Orange created seven over the game's final 24:29.

Syracuse added three insurance goals in the final moments to wrap up the 6-0 final.

Final shots were 26-1 in favor of Syracuse, with Dartmouth's shot coming off the stick of Payton Altman in the second quarter. The Orange held an 8-1 edge in penalty corners.

Dartmouth returns to action next weekend, hosting Brown on Saturday (11 a.m.) before traveling to New Hampshire on Sunday (1 p.m.).
