BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Dartmouth men's soccer team finished its time in upstate New York with a 0-0 tie against the Canisius Golden Griffins on Monday afternoon. The Big Green were forced to play down a man for 60 minutes of play following a red card but played sound defense to finish their stint in New York undefeated.
Dartmouth now sits with a record of 1-0-1 while Canisius ends its Labor Day weekend with a record of 1-2-1.
Dartmouth goalkeeper
Costi Christodoulou made three saves en route to a second-consecutive clean sheet. A red card, the first of the 2022 season, was handed to
David Alino in the first half. The Big Green outshot the Golden Griffins 9-4, but only put two on goal.
"I'm just happy to keep another clean sheet, the boys really helped me out today," Christodoulou said following the match. "As long as we can keep building from here, we'll come away with something at the end of the year."
Dartmouth and Canisius both put shots on goal in the opening two minutes of the contest.
Oskar Magnusson's opportunity in the first minute was stopped by Canisius' William Howard. Moments later, a header off a free kick was stopped by Christodoulou.
The Big Green's first opportunity of the opening half came in the 20th minute as a corner kick from
Louis Weisdorf landed in the left side of six-yard box.
Orrett Maine made an attempt with his left foot but was unable to break the scoreless tie as the shot went wide of the goal.
Another chance for Dartmouth came in the 25th minute, as a creative pass from Magnusson set
Kristian Feed up for a shot just inside the 18-yard box. Feed's shot was stopped and controlled by Howard.
Alino was given a red card with just under 16 minutes remaining in the first half following a challenge at midfield.
Another Weisdorf corner kick led to a chance for
Ben Jenkins to the left of Howard. Jenkins shot, the fifth of the afternoon for the Big Green, was fired high and wide of the net.
Dartmouth recorded two shots on goal, compared to Canisius' one in the first 45 minutes of play.
The Golden Griffins pressured the Big Green in the opening minutes of the second half. Canisius was not able to register a shot in the first 15 minutes of the half but established possession near Dartmouth's goal with a trio of corner kicks.
A turnover from Canisius in the 65th minute gave the Big Green their best chance of the second half to that point, but
Alex van Schalkwyk was unable to get a shot off inside the box following a successful challenge from the Golden Griffs. This was followed by Canisius' second shot on goal of the day, a header which was handled by Christodoulou.
Christodoulou preserved the tie for the Big Green with a diving save on a shot that was destined for the top right of the goal with just under three minutes remaining. Dartmouth was able to hold the Golden Griffins for the remainder of the match.
Dartmouth will take on the LIU Sharks in its home-opener at Burnham Field on Saturday, September 10. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. and the contest will be streamed on ESPN+ and internationally on Stretch Internet.
Notes: Christodoulou recorded his second-straight clean sheet on Monday afternoon. He is the first Dartmouth keeper to accomplish this since September 22-25, 2018, when Henry Stusnick recorded two shutouts in a row against UMass and Albany.
