The Big Green hold nation’s second leading scorer to a season-low 14 points
HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth men's basketball team trailed by 13 with 15:54 remaining in the second half, but rebounded in a big way, outsourcing Penn 36-19 the rest of the way for a thrilling 75-71 win over the preseason Ivy League favorites on Saturday afternoon in Leede Arena. The Big Green took their first lead since the first half with 2:18 remaining, and a Dusan Neskovic jumper with 1:12 on the clock gave Dartmouth the lead for good. Freshman Brandon Mitchell-Day had a huge block in the final seconds to help preserve the victory in the Big Green's Pride Game.
With the win, Dartmouth improves to 2-2 in league play (for the first time since the 2013-14 season) and 6-12 overall. Penn falls to 9-9 and 2-2 in the Ivy League. The victory was the Big Green's third straight home win over the Quakers.
After Penn shot 60.7 percent from the floor in the first half, Dartmouth held the Quakers to just 31.0 percent shooting in the second and 0-of-13 from behind the 3-point arc. The Big Green defense held the nation's second leading scorer Jordan Dingle to a season-low 14 points, breaking Dingle's streak of 20+ points at 13 games. The last time he was held to 14 or fewer points was last Feb. 18, which was 19 games ago.
"We were pretty clear with our message at halftime about what we needed to do defensively a little differently — to protect the inside and protect the 3-point line," said Dartmouth head coach David McLaughlin. "They make you defend both. That's the sign of a really good team."
For Dartmouth, junior Izaiah Robinson got the start and played a significant role guarding Dingle, while also scoring nine points offensively, including a big 3-pointer as the first half expired to pull Dartmouth within six at the break.
"When you have two first-year guys being able to do that within the flow of the game, that was really helpful for us and other guys really stepped up as well," said McLaughlin.
A tight start saw neither team lead by more than four until 12:58 was on the clock. Penn played from in front for the majority of the first half, eventually opening a seven-point, 21-14 lead following a Max Martz 3-pointer. Martz and Nick Spinoso each finished with 22 points for the Quakers.
Dartmouth pulled back within one on multiple occasions, including after an Adelekun 3-pointer, just the second of his career. That got the Big Green within 32-31 with 5:58 left in the first half.
Less than a minute later, Munro knocked down his second three to give Dartmouth a 34-32 advantage, its first lead since the early going. However, Penn responded with an 11-0 run to take a 43-32 lead. That's when Robinson's first 3-pointer of the game got the Big Green within 43-37 at the half.
Early in the second, the Quakers used a mini 5-0 surge, capped off by a Dingle field goal with 15:54 on the clock, to take their largest lead at 52-39.
"I thought when they made that run, they're up 13, there was a dead ball or a timeout and we said we need to play harder defensively than they're playing offensively… we have to," said McLaughlin. "I thought by playing a lot of guys today, guys were able to get some key rest at key moments because the guys that were in the game stepped up. We've been doing that quite a bit this year and it's paying some dividends now."
Dartmouth slowly chipped away, with five straight Mitchell-Day points in the span of 35 seconds, getting the Big Green within seven at 54-47. Not long after, another big Robinson 3-pointer, got Dartmouth within 54-51 with 11:50 on the clock.
After chipping away, the Big Green broke through as a Jaren Johnson layup evened the score at 58 with 7:35 remaining. The Quakers answered and took as much as a four-point lead, but Dartmouth wouldn't go away. A Cornish 3-pointer with 3:06 to go evened the score at 69 and a Neskovic free throw gave the Big Green a 70-69 lead with 2:18 on the clock.
Just over a minute later, Neskovic converted a tough jumper to put Dartmouth ahead, 72-71.
Dartmouth returns to the court on Monday when the Big Green travel to Harvard to face the Crimson. Gametime is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.

For the game, Dartmouth shot 46.6 percent from the floor (27-of-58), including 36.8 percent from 3-point range (7-of-19). Penn finished at 45.6 percent (26-of-57) and 25.0 percent from behind the arc (6-of-24). Dartmouth held a 38-30 edge in rebounds.
