Skier and Tennis Players atop the leaderboard today
Newly minted Big Green athletes started 2023 with impressive victories on the snow and indoors on the courts. Sophomore Allie Resnick won her first collegiate carnival race at Bates last week and followed that up with a third-place finish in the slalom. Freshman Miles Groom brings his talent across the pond from Buckinghamshire, England to the Boss Tennis Center in Hanover, N.H. He defeated two Navy players in singles and picked up a doubles point with classmate Waleed Qadir.
Their efforts are rewarded by being named The Richards Group Athletes of the week.
Each week, DartmouthSports.com will spotlight two outstanding student-athletes - one male, one female - as Athletes of the Week. Student-athletes may be chosen based upon their efforts both on and off the field of competition.
Allie Resnick, So., Vail, Colo., Alpine Skier
Sophomore Allie Resnick wasted no time in putting her talents on display, winning her first collegiate carnival race at Bates on Thursday of last week before grabbing another podium two days later. The U.S. Ski Alpine B Team member jumped out to the lead on her first run in the giant slalom at Sunday River, then made sure her lead stood up to win the event by 0.14 seconds. After rain postponed the slalom until Saturday, Resnick went right back to work and posted the fastest time on her second run, allowing her to move up into third place for another podium to lead the Big Green. She is the first women's alpine skier to reach the podium in both races of a carnival for the Big Green since Ellie Curtis '22 did so last year in the make-up races for the Vermont Carnival.
Miles Groom, Fr., Buckinghamshire, England, Men's Tennis
Miles Groom was 2-0 at No. 2 singles on Saturday as Dartmouth picked up two season-opening victories over four-time defending Patriot League champion Navy. The freshman defeated Gavin Segraves in two sets in the morning match before another straight-set win over Aniketh Ayinala in the afternoon. Groom also helped the Big Green pick up the doubles point in a clean 7-0 sweep, partnering with fellow freshman Waleed Qadir at No. 1 doubles. Following a strong opening day, Dartmouth is 2-0 for a fifth straight season.
