HANOVER, N.H. — The Dartmouth women's tennis team opened its 2023 campaign with a 5-2 win over St. John's Saturday afternoon at Alexis Boss Tennis Center, earning the doubles point before claiming four singles matches.
The victory avenged a 6-1 loss the Big Green suffered to the Red Storm in the second match of the 2022 season. Dartmouth has now won its season opener in back-to-back years.
Despite a loss at the No. 1 position, the Big Green picked up the doubles point behind strong performances on the second and third courts.
Brooke Hess and
Katie Weber downed St. Johns' Mouna Bouzagarrou and Emile Haakansson, 6-1, at No. 2 while
Emily Zhou and
Lexi Dewire battled to a 6-4 win at No. 3 over Camila Ordonez and Willa Bay Breunich.
Chidimma Okpara, who earned All-Ivy singles honors a season ago, rolled to a two-set win on the top court over Bouzagarrou. Weber and
Ujvala Jupalli cruised to victories at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively – both in two-set fashion. Zhou rounded out Dartmouth's singles victories at the No. 6 position and clinched the team's win.
Ashley Hess dropped a hard-fought three-set match on the second court.
Dartmouth returns to action Sunday, Jan. 29 when it hosts Merrimack at 2 p.m.
