NEW YORK — The Dartmouth women's basketball team lost, 79-50, on the road against Columbia, who stands alone atop the Ivy League, Saturday afternoon at Levien Gymnasium.
Taking control early and barely breaking stride, Columbia improved to 17-3 (6-1), while Dartmouth dropped to 2-19 (0-7).
Mia Curtis had scored in double figures by the opening minutes of the second quarter and finished with a team-high 12 points, plus a career-high six assists.
Emma Koch and
Grace Niekelski followed with nine apiece. The Big Green were a perfect 10-for-10 at the charity stripe, marking the first time since the 2017-18 season Dartmouth has been flawless at the line with 10 or more attempts.
Mekkena Boyd was key in that effort, going 6-for-6. Columbia was powered by Kaitlyn Davis' 19-point triple-double.
Columbia rolled to a 45-25 halftime lead, capped by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Abbey Hsu, who finished with 19 points. The Big Green battled early in the first quarter, despite facing a 29-16 deficit entering the second. Niekelski knocked down a triple to bring Dartmouth within three, 13-10, but the Lions answered with back-to-back Hsu buckets, including one of her three first-half treys. Dartmouth trimmed the lead to single digits in the final minutes of the opening quarter before Columbia scored four straight.
Curtis canned a 3-pointer to start the second quarter and Dartmouth was back within 10. Columbia didn't score until the 6:42 mark, when Jaida Patrick sank a jumper. The Big Green weren't able to creep within 10 points again for the remainder of the contest. After holding steady with a 15-point edge through most of the quarter, Columbia led by 20 for the first time after Hsu's last-second 3-pointer.
Columbia's hot shooting continued in the third, while Dartmouth shot below 20 percent from the field. The Lions' lead stretched to 28, the largest to that point, at the 3:43 mark when Davis converted an and-one opportunity.
Emma Koch's triple at 7:51 of the third was Dartmouth's last field goal until
Victoria Page knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers early in the fourth. Columbia's advantage hovered around the 30-point mark for the remainder of the game.
Dartmouth is back in action Friday, Feb. 3, again on the road, as the Big Green travel to Brown for a 7 p.m. tip-off. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats will be available through Dartmouthsports.com.
